Mini Paceman Transmission Problems

Okay, I'm officially stressed. My 2013 Mini Paceman is throwing up some serious warning lights. The engine light is on, and sometimes a transmission warning pops up too. The error memory mentions a transmission oil pressure sensor fault. To top it off, the gearbox is acting all sorts of crazy – slipping gears, shifting rough, and even making grinding noises. Could this be an easy fix, or am I facing a major headache?

That sounds rough! A transmission fault on any car is worrying. The error codes probably relate to the oil pressure sensor on the transmission. Has the gearbox oil level ever been checked? I've heard of similar issues on other cars when the oil is low, causing the sensor to throw a fault. I would definitely start by checking that.

Thanks for the quick reply! How easy is it to check the transmission oil level myself? I'm no expert mechanic, but I'm willing to get my hands a little dirty. Is there a dipstick somewhere, or do I need to get under the car?

Checking the oil level on those transmissions can be a bit tricky; they don't always have a dipstick. You usually have to access a fill plug on the side of the transmission. Honestly, if you're not super comfortable working on cars, I'd recommend taking it to a trusted workshop. They can properly check the level, look for any leaks, and diagnose the sensor issue for you. A low oil level can definitely cause the pressure sensor to freak out and trigger those symptoms, so it’s worth investigating.

Thanks so much for the help! It turned out the transmission oil level was indeed too low, causing the pressure sensor fault. The workshop located a leak, fixed it, and topped off the oil. New pressure switch and all in I was 365€ lighter, but now my Mini Paceman is shifting smoothly again!
