Mini Paceman Power Steering Issue

I'm having a real headache with my 2014 Mini Paceman diesel. It's only done 51757 km, but the power steering seems to be failing. The steering wheel vibrates, handling feels spongy, and I'm getting an error message. Steering requires increased effort, like the power steering has failed. I've read that a defective cable or plug connection could be the cause. Anyone else experienced this? Could it also be a wheel alignment issue or something with the steering system in general?

That sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my Mini Cooper, although the symptoms weren't quite as pronounced. The steering felt a bit vague, and I noticed it more at lower speeds. Have you checked the steering pump? Is there any unusual noise coming from it? It could also be the steering rack. It's like when you have a dodgy lightbulb, sometimes it's the bulb, sometimes it's the wiring!

Thanks for your reply! The steering pump seems okay, no weird noises as far as I can tell. When you say similar issue, was it also the power steering? Did you also have any error messages stored? Any additional details you can share would be greatly appreciated before I take it in.

Yes, mine was the power steering too. And yes, there was an error code stored, something about low voltage to the power steering unit if I remember correctly. It turned out to be a corroded connector. Honestly, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. Diagnosing electrical issues can be a real pain, and you don't want to risk damaging the steering rack or something else in the steering system.

Just wanted to give you an update. Took it to a trusted mechanic, and you were spot on! It was a defective plug connection, just like you suspected. They sorted it out, and the power steering is back to normal. Cost me 95€, which is a relief. Thanks again for your help!
