Thanks for the reply. When you say 'car electronics controlling the ignition system', do you mean the preheating unit itself, or something else? And where would I find the fuses related to the preheating unit? Is that in the fuse box under the hood?

Yeah, the preheating unit is what I meant. On my Opel, it was a similar setup – a module controlling the glow plugs. As for the fuses, check your car's manual. It should show you exactly where the fuse box is and which fuse is for the engine preheat system. If you're not comfortable checking it yourself, probably best to get it to a workshop. It's worth getting it checked properly to avoid any further damage.

Just wanted to let you know that the garage confirmed it was indeed the preheating unit, or glow plug control module as they called it. They found a faulty connection, like we suspected. They sorted it out, and the total was close to what I expected. Thanks again for the heads up!

That sounds suspiciously like what happened with my old Opel a while back. The engine preheat lamp stayed on, and it turned out to be a problem with the car electronics controlling the ignition system. Have you checked the fuses related to the preheating unit? It might be a simple electrical fault.
