Mini One Engine Issues

I'm experiencing some issues with my 2011 Mini One. The engine seems to have significantly reduced power, and the check engine light is illuminated. Additionally, I've noticed smoke when accelerating, the engine runs rough, fuel consumption is higher than usual, and there's some jerking when accelerating. I suspect it might be the EGR valve. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? I understand a defective EGR valve can cause exhaust gas recirculation issues.

Whoa, sounds rough! I had similar symptoms with my Mini, though I can't remember the exact mileage. Reduced power, jerking acceleration, and the check engine light taunting me. Did you check for any error codes? I think I remember reading something about the catalytic converter causing similar issues too. Is there any hissing sound when the car is idle? That was a telltale sign for me.

Thanks for the quick response! Yes, I did check the error codes, and it points directly to the EGR valve. Also, now that you mention it, I do hear a loud hissing sound when accelerating, which is new. Was the EGR valve the culprit in your case as well?

Yep, EGR valve was the issue for me too. That hissing sound makes me pretty confident that yours is also gone. I tried cleaning it, but it was a temporary fix at best. Honestly, with those symptoms, especially the smoke and rough idle, I'd recommend getting it professionally diagnosed and probably replaced. Otherwise you risk damaging the catalytic converter, and that's gonna cost you even more!

Took the Mini One to the workshop. As suspected, the EGR valve was indeed defective. They replaced it for 355€. Car runs like new now, no more check engine light or rough idle. Thanks for your help!
