Mini Countryman Overheating Issues

Alright, I'm officially stressed. My 2013 Mini Countryman is throwing a fit. The check engine light is on, and I've noticed some serious car overheating issues. I'm thinking it might be related to the active air flap – like maybe the electromechanism is defective? Anyone else run into this? I'm trying to figure out if this grille shutter thing is the culprit before I end up stranded on the side of the road.

Sounds like you might have a similar problem to what I had with my Mini (not the Countryman, but still). Check engine light and car overheating are classic signs. Have you checked your cooling system recently? It could be a faulty active air flap. Mine was stuck closed, which caused the engine to overheat. A fault code should confirm if that's the case.

That's interesting! How did you figure out it was the active air flap? And what fault code did you get? I'm trying to avoid just blindly throwing money at the problem, you know?

Yep, sounds familiar. The fault code I had pointed directly to the active air flap electromechanism. If your cooling system seems fine and you're getting similar codes, I'd bet that's your issue too. I tried to troubleshoot it myself, but eventually had to bite the bullet and take it to a workshop. Better safe than sorry when it comes to car overheating, you know?

Update time! Just got my Mini Countryman back. Turns out it was exactly what you said - the active air flap electromechanism was kaput. Cost me 590€ to get it sorted, but at least the check engine light is gone and it's not car overheating anymore. Thanks so much for the help!
