Mini Cooper Overheating Issue

My 2008 Mini Cooper diesel seems to be overheating. Also, the engine is taking much longer than usual to reach operating temperature. From what I've read, it could be a defective map thermostat, which I understand is quite common. I'm trying to gauge the extent of the issue. I've heard about a potential coolant leak related to this and anticipate a repair cost of around 350€. Any thoughts before I dive in?

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my Mini, though it wasn't diesel. The engine taking ages to warm up was the giveaway for me. Have you checked for any coolant leak around the thermostat housing? Also, is the cooling fan running constantly, even when the engine is cold?

Thanks for the quick response. I haven't noticed any coolant leak specifically, but the coolant level has dropped a bit over the last few weeks. As for the cooling fan, I'll have to pay closer attention to that. Where exactly is the thermostat housing located on these engines? Is it easily accessible?

Yeah, the dropping coolant level is a red flag. On my car, the thermostat housing was a bit awkward to get to, but I'm not 100% sure it's the same on the diesel model. Honestly, if you're not totally comfortable with the coolant system, it might be worth getting it checked by a workshop. Could save you some headaches!

Thanks for your help. It was indeed the thermostat. Ended up costing 360€, but the Mini is running smoothly again. Appreciate the advice!
