Mini Cooper Electric Steering Issue

So my 2023 Mini Cooper Electric is throwing some serious tantrums. I've clocked a lot of km, and suddenly the steering has gone all wonky. It feels like the power steering is failing – takes way more effort to turn the wheel. And to top it off, the steering wheel is vibrating like crazy. Could a faulty coding of the steering angle sensor be the reason? I'm really hoping it's not a complete sensor failure.

Sounds like a faulty angle sensor to me. I had a similar issue with my Mini – the steering got really heavy, and the traction control light was going nuts. Did you check if the wheel alignment is off? Sometimes a bad alignment can throw the sensor off.

Interesting! When yours went bad, did you experience something similar, like a total loss of power steering, or just reduced assistance? And how did you figure out it was the angle sensor specifically? Was it just trial and error, or did you get a diagnostic code?

Yeah, it was similar – felt like the power steering was cutting in and out. The shaking was unnerving. I initially suspected the worst but a diagnostic check pointed to the angle sensor. Before diving into a sensor replacement, it might be worth getting the coding checked. If that doesn't fix it, then you're probably looking at a new sensor. Best to get it looked at in the workshop, before something worse happens.

Just wanted to give a quick update. Took my Mini Cooper to the workshop, and you were spot on. The steering angle sensor was indeed the culprit. They recoded it, did a wheel alignment, and now it's driving like a dream again. Cost me 195€, which I'm happy to pay to get rid of that scary vibrating steering wheel. Thanks a bunch for your help!
