I'm not sure about checking 'the basics'. Could you elaborate on what you mean? Also, the malfunction seems limited to just the smartphone connection, no issues with steering or brakes etc.

By 'basics', I meant ensuring the Bluetooth connection is properly enabled on both your phone and the car's infotainment system. However, if the garage suspects an incorrect pairing and the issue is isolated to the smartphone connection, it would be best to proceed with their diagnostic suggestion and potential repair. The stored error code likely points to a specific communications fault.

Big thanks for your input on this! I took the Mini Clubman to my local garage. Turns out, they simply re-paired my phone, and it's all working again. The error code was cleared from the memory. Cost me 45€, so nothing major, thankfully.

Have you checked the basics first? Faulty connections can cause odd issues like this. Also, does the malfunction affect other systems, such as the steering, brakes, ignition system, or fuel system? Or is it limited to the smartphone connection?
