Mini Clubman Diesel Overheating

I come to you today with a matter of some consternation regarding my 2010 Mini Clubman Diesel, which has covered a mere kilometers. I have observed a rather troubling phenomenon: the engine appears to be overheating, and furthermore, it is taking an unacceptably long duration to attain its optimal operating temperature. Based on my preliminary investigations, which, admittedly, are of a somewhat rudimentary nature, I suspect the map thermostat may be the culprit. Is it possible that the thermostat within the cooling circuit motor is indeed defective? It feels like the engine temperature is like a see-saw, going up and down. Any thoughts on this matter would be most welcome, especially considering the potential repair cost of 350€.

Engine overheating on a Mini is never fun! I had a similar issue with my Clubman a while back. It also took ages for the engine to warm up. Have you checked for any coolant leaks around the thermostat housing? It might be worth a look before you take it to a mechanic.

Thanks for your reply! When you say "thermostat housing", do you mean where the thermostat is physically located? I haven't noticed any obvious coolant leaks, but I also haven't specifically inspected that area. Is it difficult to access or identify?

Yes, the thermostat housing is basically where the thermostat lives. On my Clubman, it wasn't immediately obvious, but there was a slight coolant leak around it. To be honest, I'm not much of a mechanic myself, so I took it to a workshop who confirmed the thermostat was faulty. They replaced the whole thermostat and housing assembly, and that fixed the problem. I'd suggest doing the same.

Just wanted to circle back and provide an update. It was indeed the thermostat housing. I ended up taking it to a workshop, and they replaced the defective thermostat and coolant. The engine now heats up much quicker, and the overheating issue is gone. Thanks again for your help!
