Mini Clubman diesel issue

Yes, the exhaust smell was significantly stronger than usual. The diagnostic pointed towards 'diesel particulate filter exhaust pressure too low'. You mentioned a blocked particulate filter. But shouldn't a blockage result in high pressure, not low? Could you elaborate on the back pressure sensor?

Ah, right, sorry about that! Low pressure... My bad, got my wires crossed there for a sec. If the diagnostic specifically says 'low pressure', then yeah, a faulty sensor is highly suspect. It's probably giving false readings. Honestly, with those symptoms, I'd bite the bullet and get it checked out by someone who knows these cars. Could be other things, but a dodgy sensor fits the bill. Best not to drive it too much in that state.

Acknowledged, and thank you for the confirmation and advice. I took the Mini Clubman to a qualified workshop, and the diagnostic confirmed the defective exhaust back pressure sensor. Repair cost was 245€ including parts and labor. The issue is now resolved.

Whoa, sounds like a bad time! I had something similar happen with my Clubman. Reduced power, clouds of smoke...not fun. Was your diesel exhaust smelling particularly strong too? Check your particulate filter. When my emission control light came on, the cause was a blocked particulate filter. Has the car been doing a lot of short trips lately? That can clog it up. Did you check the exhaust back pressure sensor?
