Mini Clubman Diesel Check Engine Light Issue

Ugh, I'm getting so frustrated with my 2011 Mini Clubman diesel! The check engine light keeps popping up, and the error memory says it's a water sensor malfunction. Plus, the engine runs rough sometimes. My local mechanic suspects a defective cable or plug connection, but honestly, I'm a bit skeptical. The car only has km on it! Has anyone experienced anything similar? Is it likely to be the car sensor itself or is there anything else I should look at?

That sounds eerily similar to a problem I encountered with my Mini Clubman, though I can't recall the exact kilometer reading at the time. The check engine light and rough running are definitely telltale signs. Have you checked the car sensor itself and its wiring for any visible damage or corrosion? It might be a simple connectivity issue, but I'm just speculating. Have you tried any sensor testing, or perhaps looked into the auto electronics with a diagnostic tool to pinpoint the exact location of the fault?

Thanks for the reply! You know, I did give the cable a wiggle, but didn't see anything obvious. When you had the problem, was it also intermittent? And roughly where IS the moisture sensor located? I'm not super familiar with the diesel engine layout. Don't want to start tearing things apart unnecessarily!

Yes, in my case, the issue was also intermittent initially, which made it even more annoying to diagnose. I also suspected it wasn't the car sensor at first. It eventually became a persistent error, though. I would say, based on your description, that it's highly probable the cable is the culprit, especially given the error code you're seeing. Considering the potential complexity of the auto electronics involved, and if you're not comfortable with extensive sensor testing, it might be worthwhile to take it to a workshop. They should be able to confirm the issue and replace the faulty component. But of course, it is up to you to decide.

Just wanted to give an update! You were spot on. Took my Mini Clubman diesel to the shop, and it was indeed the water sensor cable. They replaced it, and the error is gone, engine runs smoothly again! Cost me 95€, which honestly I was expecting worse. Thanks for the help!
