Mini Cabrio engine power loss

I am writing to inquire about a potential issue with my 2023 Mini Cabrio, a gasoline model. It has approximately 42882 km. Recently, I have noticed a significant reduction in engine power, and the error memory indicates a defective engine control unit. Could this be related to a defective main relay?

I have a similar Mini Cabrio and experienced comparable issues. Reduced engine power and an error code related to the engine control system. Have you checked the error memory yourself, and if so, what specific error codes are stored? It could give you clues regarding the computer module.

Thank you for your quick reply. Yes, I did check the error memory. It indicates a defect in the engine control unit. I am not very knowledgeable about vehicle electronics. Could a defective main relay really be the culprit, or is it more likely a more serious issue with the engine control?

A defective main relay can certainly cause issues with the engine control unit, or ECU. The relay provides power to the ECU, and if it's failing, it can cause intermittent or complete loss of power, leading to the symptoms you describe. While it's possible the ECU itself is faulty, the relay is a far more common and inexpensive failure point. However, given the error code, it's best to have it properly diagnosed by a workshop.

Thank you for your assistance. I took the Mini Cabrio to a workshop, and they confirmed the engine control unit was indeed faulty. The main relay was identified as the likely cause. The repair cost me approximately 120€, and the car is now running smoothly.
