Mazda 6 Diesel (2016) - Engine Issues Possibly Related to EGR Valve

Hey! I've got a 2016 Diesel Mazda 6 that's racked up over 255,000 KM. Lately, I've noticed my check engine light is always on, the engine occasionally shuts off without prompting, and power from the engine seems to be dropping. It's not running as smoothly as it used to and shakes a bit while idling. There's also a rough exhaust smell I can't shake. I suspect the EGR valve might be acting up. Have any of you had similar issues? How was your experience with your mechanic dealing with this? Last time I visited one, I got the short end of the stick and I'd like to avoid that happening again. Cheers!

Hey there, I can totally relate to your situation. I own a 2013 Mazda 3 Diesel, and I had the same symptoms you're describing. The constant check engine light, the occasional engine cuts, reduced power, not to mention the rough idling and that stinky exhaust. It got me pretty unnerved when it first happened. Turns out, you're right on the money with the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve suspicion. That's exactly what my issue was. My mechanic had to clean the EGR valve and the intake system as both had accumulated too much soot over the years. After that, they replaced the faulty EGR valve with a new one. I have to say, it wasn't a small task but it's manageable. As for how serious the issue was, it's quite crucial to address - neglecting it can significantly damage the engine in the long run. Hope this helps. Best of luck with your Mazda 6! Cheers!

Hey! Thanks for sharing your experience, really appreciate it. Sounds like we're in the same boat. Just wanted to ask, do you recall how much this whole clean-up and replacement set you back? Also, since you got it sorted, has there been any other related issues popping up or has the ride been smoother? Cheers!

Hey! Absolutely, happy to share! For the clean-up and replacement of that pesky EGR valve, I ended up forking over about 355 Euro. Honestly, it was a bit steep but worth every penny considering it fixed the issue without any problems. Since then, my Mazda has been running like a charm! No more jolts, no more off-putting exhaust smell, and no more unscheduled engine shut-offs. Touch wood, it's as if it went back in time to when it was running fresh off the lot. So as far as I'm concerned, there's no hindsight regret in getting the EGR issue sorted. Hope this helps! Good luck with your Mazda 6! Cheers!

Hey! Thanks a heaps for such detailed info! 355 Euro isn’t pocket change, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. The last thing I want is to end up stranded in the middle of the highway. It's comforting to know that it seems to resolve the issues. I’ll get on the phone with my mechanic first thing tomorrow and set up a time to look at this. I'm crossing my fingers for a smooth ride post-fix. Glad to hear your Mazda's doing fine now, hope I can say the same for mine soon. Again, thanks a ton and cheers!
