Mazda 2 Diesel ('14 Model) DPF Failure and Performance Issues: Seeking Advice and Experiences

Hey everyone, I've got a '14 Mazda 2 Diesel with about 94,217KM on the clock that's acting weird. Been having a bunch of issues: black smoke when I hit the gas, annoying check engine light, missing power, engine's all over the place, lousy MPG, and this blasted DPF regeneration failure. Think the differential pressure on my DPF might be too low - what do you guys reckon? Had a bit of a nightmare with some mechanic on the last go around, so I'm trying to get a handle on what's going on before I get burnt again. Anyone here dealt with the same problem before? Any tips or mechanic horror stories to share? Would really appreciate some insights! Thanks in advance.

Hey there, sounds like you're having quite a time with your Mazda. I've got a '16 Mazda CX-3 Diesel and had similar hassles not that long ago. Turns out my Exhaust back pressure sensor was defective. The thing was causing me a whole load of problems very much like yours: black smoke, engine running rough, terrible MPG... the works. Had to get it into the garage and turned out that we needed to replace the sensor altogether and do a forced regeneration manually. It wasn't a quick job, to say the least. It was indeed a serious issue because if the sensor isn't working right, it won't accurately read the exhaust pressure and your engine won't be able to adjust things like fuel injection and turbocharging as needed. Basically, it screws up the whole engine's performance and can lead to other even more serious troubles if not sorted out pronto. So, it might be worth having a chat with your mechanic about the Exhaust back pressure sensor. I know you had a tough time before, but this could just be the solution. Best of luck with it!

Hey, appreciate the swift comeback! Your situation sounds eerily similar to mine and that exhaust back pressure sensor theory really hit home. The symptoms align almost perfectly with my Mazda's peculiarities. Got a couple more questions, if you don't mind. I know the cost depends on the job's complexity, labour, and the sensor itself, but do you happen to recall what the mechanic charged you for this repair job? And since getting it fixed, have you noticed any other latent issues creeping up related to this? Cheers for sharing your experience, really puts my mind at ease!

Hello again! Glad to hear my reply resonated with your situation. As for your questions, I do remember quite clearly what the mechanic charged me. The total cost to sort out the Exhaust back pressure sensor came out to be around 250.00 €. It wasn't cheap, but considering how it solved a heap of issues, I'd say it was well worth the spend. You also asked if any other latent issues have crept up since the fix. Well, I'm happy to report that since the mechanic sorted out the Differential pressure of the DPF that had been too low, everything's been smooth sailing. No more black smoke, improved MPG, stable engine... Let me tell you, it was such a relief! So based on my experience, I'd really push for you to get that Exhaust back pressure sensor checked out. Hoping your Mazda will be back at peak performance soon! Feel free to drop a line if you have any more questions. Safe driving!

What a lifesaver you are! Can't even begin to express how helpful this information has been. €250 might seem a bit steep, but I guess it's peanuts compared to being stranded on the road. Great to know that this fix has held up for you without any subsequent issues surfacing. I will definitely mention the exhaust back pressure sensor to the mechanic this time around. Fingers crossed this will get my Mazda humming smoothly again! Your advice and insight really put me in a better headspace about sorting this out. Cheers, and safe driving to you as well!
