Jimny Remote Key Fix: Battery vs Bigger Repairs Ahead

My electronic key stopped working properly in my 2000 Jimny (1.3L gas, 102869km). Getting errors when trying to lock or unlock. Already got burned by a mechanic recently, so hoping to hear experiences before going in for repairs. Could this just be a dead key battery needing replacement, or should I expect bigger issues? Has anyone dealt with similar key problems in their Jimny?

Had the same issue with my 2003 Suzuki Grand Vitara last month. The key fob battery was showing typical low battery symptoms, inconsistent locking/unlocking and requiring multiple button presses to work. A quick battery replacement with a CR2032 cell fixed it completely. The fob battery swap is actually a simple DIY job requiring just a small screwdriver to open the key case. No need for a mechanic visit for this specific issue. If replacing the battery doesnt solve it, then there could be other problems like a faulty key circuit board or receiver issues in the car. But start with the simplest fix first, dead key batteries are the most common cause of these symptoms. The age of your Jimny matches when these issues typically show up. The original key fob batteries usually last 3-4 years before needing replacement. Its not a serious repair as long as the key itself isnt damaged. Watch for signs that its not just a low battery, like the key working fine at very close range or the central locking system having issues even with the manual key. Those would indicate different problems needing professional diagnosis.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Vitara key fob. I had a similar problem with my 2001 Jimny last summer. The electronic key was acting up just like yours, but I also noticed corrosion on the battery contacts when I opened it. After cleaning the contacts and putting in a new fob battery, it worked perfectly. Did you remember how much you paid for the battery replacement? Also curious if youve had any other electronic key issues since fixing it? My repair has held up fine so far, but always good to know what to watch for.

Since fixing my Vitara auto key issues at the shop, everything has worked perfectly. The low voltage warning disappeared right after they put in a fresh battery. Total cost was 37€ for the car key battery replacement service. Honestly, I could have saved money doing it myself like you did, but I wanted the mechanic to check the electronic system while they had it open. Good call on cleaning those battery contacts, corrosion can definitely cause connection problems with key fobs. No other electronic key problems in the past 6 months since the repair. The locking and unlocking work smoothly now with just one press. If you keep having issues even with a new battery, definitely get the receiver unit checked, but battery replacement usually sorts out most key fob problems.

Thanks for the advice. I decided to try fixing it myself first. Got a new CR2032 battery for 5€ at an electronics shop and watched a quick video on opening the key fob. The whole fix took about 10 minutes, including cleaning some light corrosion off the contacts with alcohol. Key works perfectly now, no more failed unlock attempts or warning lights. Sure beats the 85€ quote I got from the dealership for the same job. Will definitely try the DIY route first next time I have auto key issues. Just wanted to update in case anyone else runs into similar dead key battery problems. Simple fix that saved me both time and money compared to a shop visit.
