Jaguar X Type Power Loss Points to Temp Sensor Issue

My Jag X Type 2004 is showing reduced power and higher fuel consumption along with an illuminated check engine light. After some research, I suspect the exhaust temperature sensor might be causing these issues. The exhaust system seems otherwise intact, but the engine management appears to be receiving incorrect temperature readings. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and had them resolved through sensor replacement? Would appreciate hearing about repair costs and whether other components needed checking. Looking to verify if this diagnosis makes sense before heading to a workshop.

I had a similar issue with my Jaguar S Type 2006 last year, so I have some experience with exhaust sensor problems. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I encountered, reduced power, higher fuel consumption, and the check engine light. Initially thought it was the catalytic converter, but the workshop diagnosed a faulty exhaust heat sensor. The emission control system was getting incorrect readings, causing the engine to run rich. After sensor replacement and recalibration, fuel economy went back to normal and the engine regained full power. Total repair cost was 265€ including parts and labor. The heat sensor replacement itself took about 2 hours. Worth noting that they also checked the surrounding exhaust system components and found a small leak that needed fixing. To provide more specific advice, could you share: Current mileage on your X Type, Any unusual exhaust sounds or smells, Whether you notice the issues more during cold starts, If you have access to diagnostic codes from the check engine light This information would help determine if your situation matches what I experienced with the sensor replacement.

Last service was done at 62000 KM, just 1484 KM ago. The exhaust system inspection during service showed no visible issues, but the engine management light appeared shortly after. The diagnostic codes you mentioned would definitely help. My local shop has a scanner, so I will get those codes checked before proceeding with any repairs. The heat sensor replacement cost seems reasonable at 265€. Since the service was recent, they might have noticed other potential exhaust component issues. Will check the service report and get those codes read. If it turns out to be just the sensor, that would be a relief compared to more extensive repairs.

Having gone through this exact repair on my S Type, checking those diagnostic codes is definitely the right move. When my exhaust temperature sensor failed, the codes pointed directly to the sensor malfunction, which made diagnosis straightforward. Since your recent service showed no obvious exhaust system issues, this further supports the likelihood of a sensor problem. In my case, the emission control system was also affected by the faulty readings from the heat sensor, but there was no physical damage to other components. The short distance since your last service actually matches my experience, sensor failures can occur suddenly. My problems started about 2000 KM after a routine service. The good news is that if the diagnostic codes match what I experienced, the sensor replacement should resolve all three symptoms, the power loss, fuel consumption, and check engine light. A tip from my repair experience: make sure they check the sensor wiring harness during replacement. My mechanic found slight corrosion on the connectors, which could have eventually caused the same issues again. cleaning and protecting these connections added minimal cost but provided long-term peace of mind.

Thanks for the detailed information about the wiring harness inspection. Just got back from the shop with the diagnostic codes, and they confirm an exhaust sensor malfunction, specifically related to temperature fluctuation readings. The engine management system is definitely getting incorrect data. The mechanic also checked the wiring connections you mentioned and found them clean, so hopefully no additional work needed there. They quoted 280€ for the complete repair, slightly higher than your experience but still reasonable. They can fit me in tomorrow morning. The shop confirmed no other exhaust system issues, which matches with the recent service inspection. With the symptoms matching your experience so closely and the diagnostic codes pointing to the sensor, I feel confident proceeding with the replacement. Will update once the repair is done, but it sounds like this should solve the power and fuel consumption problems.
