Heavy GT Steering and ESC Light Points to Sensor Issue

Anyone dealt with steering problems on their GT? My 2010 Alfa Romeo GT (105918 KM, gas engine) has been acting up lately, steering feels heavy and the wheel shakes quite a bit. Electronic stability warning light came on recently too. Pretty sure its a steering sensor issue but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I want to hear your experiences before heading to a repair shop. What should I look out for and roughly how much did the repair cost if you had similar symptoms?

Had similar issues on my 2013 Alfa Romeo 159 with the 1.8 gasoline engine. The electronic stability warning triggered due to a faulty steering angle sensor, causing heavy steering and notable vibrations. The steering angle sensor needed recalibration and partial replacement. The process involved: Complete diagnostic scan, Removal of the steering wheel, Sensor replacement, Recoding of the new sensor to match vehicle parameters, Final testing of electronic stability systems This repair is considered serious since steering angle sensor failure can affect multiple safety systems including ESP and traction control. The sensor monitors steering input and helps maintain vehicle stability, especially during cornering and emergency maneuvers. If you are experiencing these symptoms, avoid driving in wet conditions or at high speeds. The electronic stability system may not function correctly, increasing risk of loss of control. A specialized workshop with proper diagnostic equipment is essential for this repair, as generic scanners often cant properly code the new sensor to the vehicle systems.

Thanks for sharing those details. My experience sounds very similar, the stability control warning was definitely a red flag. Got mine fixed about 6 months ago and the steering feels much smoother now. Was worried it might need a full wheel alignment but the steering angle sensor replacement sorted most issues. Did you remember roughly how much the repair cost in your case? Also wondering if youve had any other sensor failures or stability control issues since the fix?

Thanks for asking about the follow-up. Since having the steering angle sensor defect resolved, my GT has been running perfectly with no further stability control issues. The repair cost was 195 Euro for recoding the automotive sensors, which was actually less expensive than I initially feared. The steering column is working smoothly now, and I havent experienced any additional sensor failure problems. The traction control system is functioning exactly as it should. Looking back, getting it fixed promptly was definitely the right call, these steering angle sensor issues can lead to bigger problems if left unchecked. My advice to others facing similar symptoms would be to get it checked right away by a qualified technician with the proper diagnostic equipment. The electronic stability system relies heavily on accurate sensor readings to work properly.

Well, took my GT to the shop last week and got everything sorted. The mechanic confirmed it was indeed the steering angle sensor causing the stability control issues. Total bill came to 280 Euro including diagnostics and labor, more than I wanted to spend but less than I feared. The repair process was pretty straightforward. They ran a complete diagnostic scan which pinpointed the faulty sensor, replaced it, and recalibrated the system. The whole job took about 3 hours. No alignment problems were found, which was a relief. Been driving it for a few days now and the difference is night and day. Steering feels light and responsive again, no more shaking, and the electronic stability warning light has stayed off. Definitely worth getting it fixed before it led to bigger issues.
