Giulia Transmission Sensor Failure Causes No-Start

Looking for help with transmission issues on my 2020 Giulia diesel. The car wont start and displays check engine light. When driving, the transmission shifts poorly and slips between gears. My diagnostic scanner shows transmission-related error codes. I suspect the transmission parking position sensor might be faulty, as the car sometimes doesnt properly recognize when its in park. Has anyone experienced similar transmission repair issues with their Giulia? Specifically interested in hearing about repair solutions and workshop experiences. Did you need a complete transmission sensor replacement or was it a simpler fix? Any info about repair costs would be helpful too. Currently keeping the park brake engaged as a precaution when stationary.

As someone with moderate experience maintaining Alfa Romeos, I dealt with a very similar transmission failure on my 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio diesel. The symptoms matched yours exactly, problematic gear shifts, transmission-related error codes, and issues with the shift lock system. The root cause was a defective control unit affecting the automatic transmission management. Initially thought it was the gear linkage, but diagnostic testing revealed the control unit problem. The repair required specialized equipment to reprogram the new unit after installation. Like you, I had to rely on the park brake while the issue persisted. The workshop confirmed this was the right precaution to prevent potential rolling. The complete repair took 2 days and cost 1000 Euro, including parts and labor. The fix resolved all transmission-related issues and error codes. To provide more specific advice for your case, could you share: Current mileage, When the symptoms first appeared, Whether the transmission fluid has been changed recently, Exact error codes from your diagnostic scanner These details would help determine if your Giulia has the same underlying issue my Stelvio had. Consider having the transmission diagnostics done at a specialized workshop with Alfa Romeo experience. The shift lock and transmission sensor systems on these models need specific diagnostic tools.

Last service was at 145000 KM, now at 146380 KM. After having a specialized workshop look at the transmission issues, it turned out to be a faulty transmission sensor that was causing erratic gear shifting behavior. The gear shifter would sometimes get stuck between the neutral position and drive. The repair cost was 450 Euro and included a complete transmission sensor replacement along with a system recalibration. All error codes are now gone and the transmission shifts smoothly again. The park brake is no longer needed as a safety measure since the parking lock works correctly. A transmission fluid change was also done as preventive maintenance while they had everything apart. The whole repair took about 4 hours.

Thanks for the update on your Giulia repair. Your transmission issues were similar but less severe than what I experienced with my Stelvio. In my case, the faulty control unit had already caused some wear on the gear linkage components, which is why my repair costs were higher at 1000 Euro compared to your 450 Euro fix. Good call on having the transmission fluid changed during the repair. The sensor replacement combined with fresh fluid usually provides the best results for resolving transmission failure symptoms. My workshop also recommended this approach, though in my case additional components needed replacement. The neutral position issue you mentioned with the shifter getting stuck is quite typical for these transmission sensor faults. After my repair, I also noticed significantly smoother gear changes and proper shift lock operation. Its worth noting that regular transmission fluid changes can help prevent future sensor issues. Since my repair, I have started doing them more frequently than the standard service intervals suggest, and havent experienced any further transmission issues in 50000 KM of driving.

Thanks everyone for the insights. Just wanted to close this thread with my final update after getting 5000 KM on the clock since the automatic transmission repair. The transmission sensor replacement completely fixed the issues and the car runs perfectly now. No more error codes or problems with gear shifts. For anyone searching with similar symptoms: my total repair costs broke down to 450 Euro including: New transmission sensor, System calibration, Fresh transmission fluid, Labor costs The main signs that pointed to the sensor issue were: Slipping between gears, Car not properly detecting park position, Transmission-related error codes, Needing to use the park brake as backup The repair took about 4 hours and the transmission shifts better than ever. Definitely worth getting it checked by a specialist workshop when these symptoms appear rather than risking more serious transmission failure. Regular maintenance and fluid changes seem key to preventing future problems.
