Ford Galaxy 2006: Symptoms and solutions for engine problems and high fuel consumption

Hey guys, I'm really worried about my 2006 Ford Galaxy, gasoline engine with 123933 km on the clock. There is black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light is on, and there is a loss of power at the start. Uneven engine running, jerking when accelerating, starting problems, increased fuel consumption, intermittent idling - and it shakes like mad when idling. I suspect it could be the ignition coil or that misfires have been detected. Has anyone had similar problems before? How was your experience with your mechanic? I wasn't necessarily happy with mine last time... Would be grateful for any tips.

Hey, I can understand what you're going through. I had a similar problem with my 2009 Ford Mondeo and it sounds very much like a faulty engine control unit. Just like you, my car also had its quirks: starting problems, increased fuel consumption and it jerked like crazy. In my case, however, the warning light for the engine control unit had also come on. In the end, the engine control unit had to be replaced. It wasn't a minor procedure, but it really did improve things. Since then, my car has been running smoothly again and I haven't noticed any further problems. So it might be worthwhile for you to have it checked before you look at other parts. And you were right about the ignition coil and the misfires, they were actually detected in my car too, but since the visit to the mechanic they have been completely resolved.
