Ford EcoBoost 1.0L Showing Power Loss & Knock Symptoms

Thanks for sharing your Polo experience. My Up had almost identical issues last year, the jerking, smoke and power loss were really concerning. The knock sensor readings were all over the place too. After proper engine tuning and a full cylinder head cleaning the car runs like new again. I was surprised how much carbon buildup there was when they opened it up. Now I make sure to use higher fuel octane to help prevent it from happening again. Mind sharing what you ended up paying for the repairs? Also curious if youve had any issues pop up since getting it fixed? Still monitoring mine closely even though its been running great for 8 months now.

I paid 425€ for the complete combustion chamber cleaning and decarbonizing service. The pre-ignition and knocking issues completely disappeared after the repair. My Polo has been running smoothly for over a year now, with no signs of the previous problems returning. The mechanic explained that using better quality fuel with proper fuel octane ratings helped prevent new carbon deposits from forming. The engine tuning they performed as part of the service also made a huge difference in how the car runs. Regular maintenance and premium fuel definitely seem worth it to avoid that intense piston slap and power loss we both experienced. Since the repair, fuel economy has actually improved and the engine feels more responsive than ever.

Thanks everyone for the detailed replies. After reading about your experiences, I finally got my Up fixed last week. Found a certified mechanic who really knew his stuff about these engines. The diagnostic showed heavy carbon deposits in the combustion chamber, just like you all suggested. They did a complete cylinder head cleaning, adjusted the ignition timing, and replaced a faulty knock sensor. Total bill came to 490€, bit more than expected but worth every cent. The difference is amazing, no more jerking or smoke, and the engine runs perfectly smooth even under hard acceleration. They showed me the carbon buildup they cleaned out and it was shocking how much had accumulated. Going to stick with higher octane fuel from now on and keep up with proper engine tuning schedules. Already put 500km on it since the repair and everything works like new. Really glad I asked here before just taking it to any unusual shop. Would have probably ended up with a much bigger repair bill if the detonation issues had continued.

Having experienced similar symptoms with my 2016 VW Polo 1.0 TSI, this sounds like carbon deposits in the combustion chamber combined with potential detonation issues. When my car showed these symptoms, rough running and power loss were clear indicators of carbon buildup on the cylinder heads. The smoke and knock during acceleration typically point to improper combustion timing, often made worse by deposits interfering with proper fuel mixture. The repair required removing the cylinder heads for thorough cleaning and decarbonizing. The work also revealed worn spark plugs which contributed to the incomplete combustion. While the job was extensive, catching it early prevented more serious engine damage that could have resulted from sustained detonation. For your Up, using higher fuel octane temporarily might help reduce knocking, but wont fix the underlying issue. The symptoms strongly suggest professional cleaning of the combustion chamber is needed. Without proper attention, these deposits can lead to scoring of cylinder walls and eventual piston slap. Consider getting the fuel injectors tested as well, since they often contribute to carbon buildup when not functioning properly. This isnt a quick fix job but addressing it properly prevents more costly engine repairs later.
