Fiat 124 Gasoline Engine Problems: Cold Start Issues, Weak Battery, and Warning Light on Speedometer

Hey everyone, my 2017 Fiat 124 with a Gasoline engine has been acting strange lately. It has a longer cold start time, won't start sometimes, and there's a weird noise from the engine. Plus, the battery seems weak upon startup, the lights are either dim or flickering, and there's a warning light in the speedometer. My guess is that the engine might be failing to start, but I'm not sure. Anyone else experienced this and managed to fix it at their workshop? I'd appreciate your advice on pinpointing the issue and troubleshooting. Thanks!

Hey there! I've got a 2015 Fiat 500 and had a pretty similar experience. I reckon we're on the same page here. Now, I'm no mechanic, but I've been around cars enough to gain some experience. What happened with me was that the starter motor was defective. I had to take it to my local workshop for a replacement. Cost me around 565 Euro, wasn't too thrilled about that, but hey, got it sorted. But your car's symptoms could be different, there might be other issues going on. It's hard to say without knowing more about your car's condition. Have you noticed any more symptoms, or has it been recently serviced? Providing those details could help narrow down the problem.

Hey, cheers for the swift reply. Gosh, it could be a whole lot of things then. I don't think there were any more symptoms, and the funny thing is, it had its last service around the 70,000km mark, so roughly 1331km ago! Was proper serviced – oil change, filters, spark plugs, and all. Guess no one saw this starter motor issue coming, huh? So should I take it to the workshop and ask them to specifically check the starter motor? The 565 Euro cost is hefty but if it gets the job done, gotta do what you gotta do, right?

Spot on! It's hard to predict these things sometimes. Based on your recent service and no new symptoms, the starter motor does seem like a likely place to start. It could be a little worn out or there might be some cabling issues. Talking from my experience, the weak battery and the warning light in my speedometer were due to the same. Taking it to the workshop for a thorough check sounds like a good plan. Make sure they check your battery and the electrical system too while they're at it. A battery nearing its end of life can do some funny things to a car's behavior. And you're absolutely right. It's a bit of a sting to the wallet, but making sure your car's up and running smoothly gets top priority. Remember, safety first! Let me know how it goes, fingers crossed it's something less costly. Good luck!

Hey, thanks a million for the brilliant advice! You're a lifesaver. Yes, you're right. I'll make sure to have them check the battery and electrical system too. The cost is a bit daunting but understanding the safety aspect puts it into perspective. No compromise on road safety, indeed! As soon as I get the car inspected and fixed, I'll share an update about the outcome. Fingers crossed, and hopefully, it'll be something minor. Cheers!
