Diesel particulate filter blockage in Peugeot 407: Black smoke, power loss and failed DPF regeneration

Hi guys, I have a problem with my diesel Peugeot 407 from 2008, which now has 163009 km on the clock. When I accelerate, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, plus I have a strong exhaust smell, a loss of power, and the check engine light is on. A DPF regeneration has also failed. It seems to me that the diesel particulate filter is quite full. Have any of you had similar problems? What did your mechanic do and what was your experience? I'm a little wary after my last experience with the garage. I would be grateful for any advice!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2011 Peugeot 508. The symptoms sound very much like a defective diesel particulate filter (DPF). It was exactly the same for me. Black smoke, loss of power, and the indicator light. And the DPF regeneration was not successful for me either. Last time I had to go to the garage and they replaced the DPF. It's actually a serious problem and can even lead to engine damage in the long term if it's not fixed. Make sure you find a garage that can do the DPF check and replacement properly. In my case, they used a, well, pretty decent tool with compressed air and water to remove the old DPF and then installed the new DPF. It was quite an undertaking, but I'm glad I got it done. Since then, everything is back to the way it should be. So, better get it checked and repaired if necessary before it causes even bigger problems. Because believe me, this condition is definitely not normal. Good luck!

Thanks for your quick reply! That sounds pretty time-consuming with the DPF replacement... Can you perhaps remember how much the whole thing cost you? Has anything else gone wrong since then or did everything run like clockwork after the replacement? I'd like to be as informed as possible before deciding what to do next. Thx!

Hello again! Yes, I can still remember the costs. The diesel particulate filter was defective due to high mileage, so I had to have it replaced. It cost me a whole €1550, quite a lot, but I had to go through with it. And let me tell you, since then my Peugeot has been running like a kitten again. The diesel particulate filter is no longer heavily loaded and everything runs as it should. So despite the high cost, I haven't regretted it. Hope this helps you with your decision, good luck!

Glad to hear your car is running well again after the replacement! Your information is very helpful, even if the price of €1550 is pretty hefty... Oh dear. But if it ends up helping my car run normally again with no major damage, I think it might be worth the expense. Thanks for your helpful advice and encouragement! I will look for a reliable mechanic and get ready to have the DPF replaced. Fingers crossed that all goes well.
