Diesel BMW 6 Series from 2007: Black smoke, loss of power and other symptoms - suspected defective fuel volume regulator

Greetings, my old 2007 BMW 6 series with a diesel engine and 317892 km on the odometer is experiencing some strange symptoms. Black smoke when accelerating, engine stalls and I feel a loss of power. There are also jerky movements when accelerating, poor fuel economy and a strong exhaust smell. The car also has trouble idling and the check engine light is constantly on. I had a bad experience at my last mechanic visit, so I wanted to ask here before going to a garage. I suspect the fuel volume regulator may be the culprit - have any of you had similar problems and what was your experience at the garage? What costs did you incur and were the repairs successful? I look forward to hearing your experiences and advice. Thanks in advance!

Hi buddy, recently had a similar problem with my older model, a 2004 BMW 4 series. Heavy emissions, loss of power and even the check engine light coming on all the time... I know it all too well! Took my car to the garage and it turned out to be something serious. The mechanics told me it was a blockage in the DPF (diesel particulate filter) and the injectors weren't working properly, resulting in poor combustion. They had to clean the DPF and replace the injectors. Unpleasant business, I tell you. I wish it had just been the fuel volume regulator, but sometimes you have to dig deep for the solution. The good news is, after the work was done, my car ran like a dream again. No more smoke, no more loss of power and no more exhaust smell. Hope that helps you a bit. Wish you good luck!

Hey, thanks for the helpful reply! Seems like this might be more work than I originally thought. Funny coincidence that we have such similar problems. Can you remember how much the fun cost you? And have there been any subsequent problems since then or is your 4 still running smoothly?

Hey, no problem, happy to help! I can tell you that the repair cost quite a bit, I have to admit. The wiring harness/plug alone was broken and the repair cost a whopping €155. But since then, the car has really run like clockwork. And regarding your concern about the fuel volume regulator: it was actually faulty in my case too. But the mechanics fixed it and there have been no more problems since then. So don't worry, after a visit to the workshop you'll be cruising around with a smile on your face again. I hope this helps you a little. Good luck with it!

You've really encouraged me, thank you for that! It's quite an expensive story, but if the car is running smoothly again afterwards, it's certainly worth it. I think I'll follow your advice and see a mechanic. Hopefully my trusty old beast will be able to keep running without any problems afterwards. Thank you again, your help was really useful! See you next time and have a good ride!
