Dead Battery Signs in VW Lupo, Multiple Warning Lights

My VW Lupo (2004, gas engine, 54635km) shows several warning signs that point to a low battery situation. The lights are flickering, error messages pop up in the speedometer, and the engine struggles when starting. The car battery seems very weak overall. Had some issues with mechanics before, so I want to make sure I get it right this time. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their car battery? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost in your case?

Had similar symptoms on my VW Polo from 2007 with the 1.4 TSI engine. The electrical system showed identical warning signs, flickering lights and multiple error messages. Initially thought it was just a discharged battery. The battery sensor turned out to be defective, causing incorrect readings and improper charging. This meant the vehicle battery was getting inconsistent power, leading to the starting problems. When the sensor fails, the car computer cant properly monitor the battery charge state. The repair involved replacing both the battery sensor and installing a new battery since the old one had been damaged from improper charging cycles. Its actually a serious issue that can leave you stranded if not addressed, as the faulty sensor keeps draining the battery even when the car is off. The symptoms are pretty clear indicators of battery drain issues. Would recommend getting it checked soon, as continuing to drive with a malfunctioning sensor can damage other electrical components over time. For reference, I drive regularly and maintain the car well, but this issue developed suddenly over a few weeks before becoming critical. The repair resolved all electrical problems completely.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Polo battery issue. My Lupo had almost identical problems two months ago, and your post makes me think I made the right call getting both the sensor and battery replaced instead of just the battery. The mechanic also found corroded battery terminals which apparently contributed to the charging problems. After cleaning the terminals and installing the new parts, all the electrical system warnings disappeared completely. Really curious what the final cost was in your case. I paid 380€ including parts and labor. Have you noticed any other electrical issues since the repair?

Your experience matches mine exactly. After getting the battery sensor replaced on my Polo, the vehicle battery charging issues completely resolved. The total repair cost was 315€, which included fixing the defective sensor and testing the electrical system. This was actually cheaper than your repair since my terminals were in good condition and didnt need work. All the warning lights and electrical problems disappeared right after the fix. The battery now maintains proper charge levels and the car starts perfectly every time. Its been running flawlessly for months now with no signs of low battery or charging problems. Regular driving keeps the battery at optimal charge, and the new sensor ensures proper power management. The mechanic mentioned that catching the failing sensor early prevented additional damage to the charging system components. Getting both the sensor and battery issues addressed at once is definitely the right approach for these symptoms.

Thanks for the advice. Just wanted to share how my repair went. Took the car to a small specialized workshop last week. The mechanic did a complete electrical system diagnostic and found exactly what was discussed here, bad battery sensor and a failing car battery. The repair took about 2 hours. They replaced the dead battery, installed a new sensor, and cleaned all connections. The car starts instantly now and all those annoying warning lights are gone. Engine runs smoother too. Total cost came to 380€, which seems fair considering both parts needed replacement. The vehicle battery they installed comes with a 3-year warranty, so that gives some peace of mind. Really glad I checked here first. Was tempted to just replace the battery on my own, but the sensor issue would have continued causing battery failure. Saved myself from future headaches and possibly getting stranded somewhere with a drained battery.
