Clubman automatic transmission issues

Alright, so I'm officially losing my mind over this Clubman! It's a gasoline model with 182141 km on the clock, and the automatic transmission is completely bonkers. I can't start the engine half the time, the check engine light is mocking me, and the gearbox is slipping like crazy. Plus, I'm getting some error code related to the park position being defective. From what I've gathered, it might be a dodgy control unit. Anyone else dealt with this headache? And is a 1000€ repair bill a reasonable expectation?

Whoa, that sounds rough! I had something kinda similar happen with my Mini, although it wasn't exactly the same. My gear shifter was acting up, and the car wouldn't always recognize when I put it in park. Did you check the shift lock? It's a safety feature that prevents you from shifting out of park unless your foot is on the brake. Maybe yours is stuck or something?

Shift lock, eh? Never heard of it! Where exactly is that located, and how would I check it? And also, did yours throw a check engine light and cause the transmission to act wonky like mine is doing?

Okay, so the shift lock is usually near the gear shifter itself. There might be a small cover you can pop off to manually release it. BUT... if you're getting a check engine light and the transmission is slipping, it does sound like a bigger problem than just the shift lock. In my case, the faulty park position was a symptom of the same darn defective control unit. Given all the symptoms you mentioned, I'd seriously consider getting it checked out by a workshop. It's probably that control unit they mentioned.

You are a lifesaver! After a bit of digging and checking with a local garage, it looks like you nailed it. It's indeed the control unit. Cost me 1000€ to get it sorted, but at least my Clubman is back on the road. Thanks a bunch for your help!
