Cayenne Hybrid Problems: Black Smoke & Rough Running Issues

Hey everyone, my 2014 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid is giving me headaches. It's blowing black smoke when I accelerate, engine's running rough with constant jerking, and I've got the check engine light on. Car's also stalling at idle and fuel consumption has gone through the roof. Sometimes it won't even start. I suspect it might be related to the ignition coils, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar issues. What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Any tips on troubleshooting would be great. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I've got some experience with similar issues on my 2016 Porsche Panamera Hybrid (moderate car experience here). Had almost identical symptoms, black smoke, rough running, and stalling. Turned out to be a faulty cable connection to the ignition coil. Took it to my trusted workshop, Autohaus Schmidt, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The repair came to 365€, they had to replace the damaged wiring and check all connections to the ignition coils. Car's been running perfectly since then. Can you share your current mileage and if you've had any recent work done on the engine? Might help pinpoint if we're dealing with the same issue.

Thanks for sharing that! My Cayenne's at 111381 KM and had its last service about a month ago. The symptoms started showing up just last week. What you're describing sounds eerily similar to what I'm experiencing. Did you notice any warning signs before the full-blown issues started? I'm thinking of taking it to the dealership tomorrow, but your experience with Autohaus Schmidt and the specific fix is really helpful to know. At least I can go in there with some idea of what might be wrong.

Hey again! Yeah, I totally get what you're asking about the warning signs. Actually, before my Panamera went full drama queen with all those symptoms, I did notice a few things about 2-3 weeks before. The engine would occasionally hesitate for a split second during acceleration, nothing major, just enough to make me go "hmmm." Also had this tiny rough idle that came and went, especially when the engine was cold. Speaking of dealerships, not gonna lie, I initially thought about going there too, but Autohaus Schmidt saved me some serious cash. The dealership quoted me almost double what I ended up paying! But hey, if you're going to the dealer, definitely mention the cable connection issue I had. Sometimes these hybrid systems can be super sensitive to even slightly loose connections. Just curious, have you noticed any difference in how your car behaves when it's cold versus when it's warmed up? With mine, the symptoms were definitely worse during cold starts. And considering your Cayenne's got similar mileage to what mine had when this happened (I was at about 108000 KM), it could definitely be the same gremlin. Keep me posted on what they find! Always interested to hear how these things turn out.

Thanks so much for all these details, this is super helpful! And yes, now that you mention it, I've definitely noticed it's worse during cold starts. This morning it was particularly bad, took three attempts to get it going. Really interesting about the price difference between the dealership and Autohaus Schmidt too. I've actually just called around and found a well-reviewed independent Porsche specialist nearby who can take a look tomorrow morning. Going to mention the cable connection issue you had, might save them some diagnostic time. It's such a relief to hear your car's running perfectly after the fix. Will definitely update you once I know what's going on with mine. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience. Really helped me feel less anxious about the whole situation!
