Canyon Alternator Failure Warning Signs: What To Expect

My 2020 Canyon is showing signs of alternator issues. The engine power keeps dropping, warning lights are on, and I'm getting weak starts with flickering headlights. The battery low warning appeared recently too. The car barely starts in the morning, and all electrical systems seem weak. I suspect an alternator issue but want to confirm before replacing it. Has anyone dealt with similar charging system problems on their Canyon? What was your repair process and cost for the alternator replacement? Would appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially if you got it fixed at a shop.

Had a similar charging system problem with my 2018 Sierra last year. As someone with moderate DIY experience working on cars, I first noticed the same symptoms, flickering lights, weak starts, and dashboard warnings. After the car wouldn't start one morning, I had it towed to my regular workshop. The diagnostic showed a failed alternator that was no longer properly charging the battery. The serpentine belt was also showing wear, so they recommended replacing both components to prevent future issues. Total repair cost was 960 Euro, which included: New alternator, New serpentine belt, Labor, Diagnostic testing The car has been running perfectly since the alternator replacement, with no more electrical issues or starting problems. What trim level is your Canyon? Also, what's the mileage? This info would help determine if your symptoms match the typical failure pattern. Have you noticed any squealing sounds from the engine bay, especially when starting the car or turning the steering wheel? These details could help confirm if it's definitely the alternator or possibly another component in the charging system.

Latest service was 2 months ago at 95000km. The squealing noise is definitely there when turning the steering wheel, and its getting louder each week. After reading up on similar alternator issue cases, I checked the battery voltage with a multimeter, it shows 11.8V when running, which seems way too low. The mechanic at my last service said the serpentine belt might need replacement soon, but I decided to wait. Now I wish I had changed it then. Want to avoid getting stranded somewhere with a car that wont start. Does anyone know if its risky to keep driving it like this for another week until I can get it to a shop? Those voltage readings have me worried.

Based on those voltage readings and symptoms, you definitely shouldnt wait too long to get it fixed. A healthy charging system should show around 13.8-14.4V when running, so 11.8V indicates your alternator isnt providing proper charging. The voltage drop youre experiencing could leave you stranded at any time. The squealing noise with steering is a classic sign of a failing serpentine belt, which drives both your alternator and power steering pump. My Canyon had the exact same symptoms before the alternator completely failed. You can probably drive it for a few days if absolutely necessary, but I would: Avoid night driving (to reduce battery drain from headlights), Keep trips short, Carry a portable jump starter just in case, Have the car towed if you notice any engine misfire or complete drop in power The risk is that the serpentine belt could snap completely, which would disable both charging and power steering instantly. When mine failed, the battery drained completely within 20 minutes of driving. I learned the hard way that ignoring car electronics warnings usually leads to bigger problems. The combined alternator and belt replacement will cost more now, but its better than being stranded or causing additional damage to other components.

Thanks for the info. I definitely need to get this sorted ASAP. Just called a local shop and booked it in for tomorrow morning. Not worth risking getting stranded, especially with that concerning voltage reading. Going to pick up a portable jump starter today just to be safe for the drive to the shop. My serpentine belt is definitely screaming for replacement too, that squeal when turning is impossible to ignore now. Will update once I know the full diagnosis, but sounds like Im looking at a similar repair bill to yours with both the alternator and belt needing replacement. At least the charging system issues will be properly fixed and I can stop worrying about every warning light that pops up on my dash.
