Buick Regal's Weak Heat Linked to Cooling Valve Issues

My 2016 Buick Regal heating system barely works. The error code reader shows issues related to the automotive valve in the cooling system. The car has 177k on the clock. Im wondering if anyone has dealt with similar heating problems and what it took to fix it? The engine coolant level is good but the heat output is really weak. Could this be a heater core problem or just a valve blockage? Looking for advice before heading back to a shop since my last mechanic experience wasnt great.

Had a similar problem with my 2013 Buick LaCrosse at 165k miles. The heating issue turned out to be a faulty automotive valve in the cooling system. Initially thought it was the heater core, but diagnostic testing revealed the water valve was stuck in a partially closed position. The symptoms matched exactly, weak heat output despite normal coolant levels and no signs of engine overheating. The valve controls coolant flow through the heater core, and when it fails, it restricts hot coolant from reaching the passenger compartment. The repair required removing several components to access the valve assembly. The technician found corrosion had damaged the electrical connector, causing intermittent valve operation. They replaced the entire valve assembly and cleaned all connecting points. This was a moderate repair job, not engine-critical but definitely needed fixing before winter. After the repair, the car heating system worked perfectly again. The Buick heating system design is pretty robust, but these valves can fail over time, especially with higher mileage. Would recommend getting it diagnosed properly, the symptoms point strongly to a valve issue rather than a heater core problem, which would typically show other signs like sweet smell or foggy windows.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have the same valve blockage issue on my 2016 Regal last winter and got it fixed. The repair really solved the weak heating problem completely. Just wondering, do you remember roughly what the repair cost was for your LaCrosse? Also curious if youve had any other cooling system issues pop up since getting the valve replaced? My coolant level has been steady but Im keeping an eye on it to catch any potential heater core problems early.

Thanks for asking about the repair costs. The water valve defective part was indeed fixed on my LaCrosse, and the total came to 95 for the electrical repair work on the cable connection. Much more affordable than I initially feared when the car heating problems started. Since getting the valve blockage sorted out, the cooling system has been running perfectly with no issues. Like you, I regularly check the engine coolant levels, but everything has remained stable. The repair shop did a thorough job cleaning the connecting points, which probably helped prevent any recurring problems. It sounds like you made the right call getting yours fixed when you did. These valve issues tend to be pretty straightforward repairs when caught early, before they can cause more extensive cooling system damage.

Thanks everyone for the helpful feedback. I ended up taking my Regal to a different shop last week and got the valve replaced. Total cost was around €280 including parts and labor. The mechanic showed me the old valve which was completely gunked up with debris. The heating system now works perfectly, full heat within minutes of starting the car. What a difference compared to the weak airflow I was dealing with before. The shop also pressure tested the cooling system and confirmed the heater core is in good shape with no leaks. Really glad I got a second opinion instead of putting up with the previous shops poor service. Sometimes finding the right mechanic makes all the difference in getting these automotive valve issues diagnosed and fixed correctly the first time.
