BMW X7 Power Steering Fails At 177K, Urgent Help Needed

Hey all! Having trouble with my 2019 BMW X7 (177k km, gas engine) and need your input. The steering feels really off, no power assist, wheel shakes quite a bit, and handling feels loose. Got an error code stored too. Pretty sure it's power steering related. Last mechanic visit wasn't great, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar steering issues on their X7? What was the fix and how much did it cost? Any recommendations for handling this? Thanks in advance for your help!

Had the exact same issue on my 2016 BMW X5 last summer. Power steering went out completely while driving. Scary stuff. The culprit was a faulty wiring harness connection to the electric power steering unit. The plug had corroded and lost proper contact. Mechanic found the stored error code pointing to power steering communication failure. Initially thought it was the steering rack going bad (which would've been major), but thankfully just needed the wiring connection cleaned, resealed, and properly secured. The connector was also replaced as preventive maintenance. Job took about 2 hours to diagnose and fix. Not a serious repair compared to full steering rack replacement, but definitely not something to ignore. Proper power steering is crucial for safe handling. I'd suggest getting it checked soon, these symptoms match my experience exactly. Just make sure to find a shop that specializes in BMW electrical systems.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Would you mind letting me know roughly how much they charged you for the repair job? Also curious if you've had any steering-related problems pop up since getting it fixed?

Hey there! Glad I could help! Just to follow up, since getting that wiring harness connection fixed last summer, my X5's steering has been working perfectly. No issues whatsoever with the power assist or handling. It was such a relief that it turned out to be just a cable/connection problem rather than a full steering rack failure! The total bill came to 95€, which included diagnostics and the replacement connector. Pretty reasonable considering how crucial power steering is for safely handling these big BMWs. The shop had it done in about 2 hours. Pro tip: if you notice any steering issues, get it checked right away. I got lucky catching mine early before it could cause any related damage. Plus, driving without proper power assist is pretty nerve-wracking! Let me know how it goes with yours. Always happy to share experiences with fellow BMW owners.

Thanks so much for all those details! You've honestly made me feel much better about this whole situation. Just got back from a reputable mechanic who specializes in European cars. Turns out you were spot on, it was indeed a wiring issue with the power steering system. They found corrosion in the connector, similar to your case. Total bill came to a bit more than yours since they had to replace a few additional connectors, but still way better than what I feared it might cost! The steering's back to normal now, smooth and responsive like it should be. Such a relief! The mechanic also showed me exactly what was wrong and explained everything clearly, which I really appreciated. Definitely sticking with this shop for future repairs. Thanks again for sharing your experience. It really helped me know what to expect and not panic about needing a whole new steering system. Next time I notice anything off with the car, I won't wait around to get it checked!
