BMW X6 Stalling & Jerking: Ignition Coil Warning Signs

Hey all! My 2018 BMW X6 (80,197 KM, gas engine) is giving me headaches lately. The engine keeps stuttering and stalling at idle, plus I'm getting terrible response when I hit the gas. There's also some nasty jerking during acceleration, and yes, the check engine light is on. I suspect it might be the ignition coil, but after a previous nightmare experience with a mechanic, I'm a bit wary about going back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their X6? If so, was it the ignition coil, and did you find a reliable fix? Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey there! I actually faced very similar issues with my 2015 BMW X5 35i last year. The symptoms you're describing, especially the stuttering, jerking, and poor throttle response, match exactly what I experienced. In my case, it turned out to be two bad ignition coils plus one fouled spark plug. Had to get all three replaced at the garage. The mechanic found that one of the coil connectors was also corroded, which was causing intermittent connection issues. The fix wasn't particularly complex, but it needed proper diagnostic equipment to pinpoint the exact cylinders affected. This isn't typically a serious issue, but it needs to be addressed soon to prevent any potential damage to your catalytic converter. The repair took about 2 hours at my trusted garage. Since then, the car has been running smooth as new, no more jerking or hesitation. Just make sure whoever checks it uses genuine BMW parts. Worth getting it sorted soon.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful and sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Really glad to hear you got it sorted with the coils and plugs. Would you mind telling me roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole job? Also, just curious, has everything stayed running smoothly since the repair, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Really appreciate the tip about using genuine parts too. Think I'll bite the bullet and get it looked at this week.

Hey again! I'm happy to give you an update! I can definitely confirm that getting it fixed was the right call. The mechanic found exactly what I suspected, a faulty ignition coil was the culprit. They charged me 95 € to fix the cable connection that was causing the problem. Pretty reasonable, if you ask me! The best part? My X5 has been running like a dream ever since. No more stuttering, no more jerking, and the engine response is back to being crisp and smooth. It's been several months now, and I haven't had a single issue pop up. Honestly, it feels like I'm driving a different car, in a good way! Just to give you some peace of mind: once they fix the ignition coil properly, these problems typically don't come back. The key is making sure they use genuine parts and check all the connections thoroughly. Sounds like you're planning to get it looked at soon, that's definitely the smart move. Trust me, you'll notice the difference right away! Let us know how it goes when you get it fixed. I'm betting you'll have the same positive outcome I did!

Just wanted to follow up and share my mechanic experience! Finally got my X6 checked out yesterday, and you were spot on. Had three bad ignition coils and two worn spark plugs that needed replacing. The whole thing cost me about 280 € for parts and labor, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The mechanic I found was fantastic, really took the time to show me the old parts and explain everything. What a difference from my last repair experience! The best part? The car's running perfectly now. No more stuttering, no more jerking, and the acceleration is smooth as butter. It's like driving a completely different vehicle. Thanks again for giving me the confidence to get it sorted. Would have probably kept putting it off if you hadn't shared your experience. Really appreciate everyone's help here! Looking forward to many more smooth rides ahead. Guess sometimes you just need that little push to do the right thing!

My engine starts to jerk when cold and the check engine light comes on, but after the car has warmed up for about 10 minutes. Everything is normal. I have already compressed the 1 injector but nothing.

Start by checking the spark plugs and ignition coils, as these are common culprits for jerking and check engine lights, especially when the engine is cold. Inspect them for wear or damage and replace if necessary. If the issue persists, it might be worth scanning for error codes to get more specific information. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!
