BMW X6 Diesel: Jerking and Stalling, Help Needed!

Hi everyone! My 2021 BMW X6 diesel is acting up pretty badly. When accelerating, the car jerks and the engine runs rough. It's gone into limp mode, throwing a check engine light, and I'm getting reduced power. The engine stalls at idle and there's a strong diesel smell coming from the exhaust. I suspect it might be the intake manifold, but I'd like to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. Has anyone experienced this combination of issues? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hey there! I've got some experience with cars and had a very similar issue with my 2019 BMW X5 diesel last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through, jerking, rough running, limp mode, the whole deal. Took it to my regular workshop and it turned out to be a scorched intake manifold that was leaking. Had to replace the entire manifold assembly. The repair bill came to around 1180 Euro, which wasn't fun, but it fixed the problem completely. Haven't had any issues since then. Before I can give you more specific advice, could you share what error codes you're getting? Also, how many miles/kilometers are on your X6? The failure pattern can be different depending on the mileage. Fun fact, my mechanic mentioned this isn't uncommon on the diesel models, including the X3 from around the same years.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I've got 148104 KM on my X6, and it's been regularly serviced. Honestly, hearing about your X5 having the same symptoms makes me think I might be dealing with the same manifold issue. I haven't pulled the error codes yet, but I'll get those tomorrow when my scanner arrives. Really appreciate the heads up about the repair costs. Guess I better start preparing my wallet for this one! Did your repair take long? I need to figure out if I should arrange alternative transport.

Hey again! Yeah, looking back at our similar issues, I totally get your concern about the repair time. For my X5, the whole job took about two days, one day for diagnosis and parts ordering, and another for the actual repair. My mechanic wanted to be thorough and check everything while they had it apart. Just a heads up based on my experience, when they opened up my engine, they found that the manifold damage had left some debris in the system. They had to do a bit of extra cleaning to make sure nothing would cause problems later. So depending on how long you've been driving with these symptoms, it might need a bit more work than mine did. Also, good call on getting the scanner! When I checked mine, I got error codes related to boost pressure and airflow, can't remember the exact numbers now, but they pointed straight to the manifold issue. Once you get those codes, let me know what they say. It'll help confirm if we're dealing with the same problem. The repair wasn't cheap, but honestly, it was worth every penny to get my car running properly again. Just make sure you get a warranty on the new parts, that's something I insisted on with mine.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! Two days for the repair doesn't sound too bad, I'll definitely arrange to work from home those days. I've actually noticed the symptoms getting worse over the last week, so I'll get it to the shop as soon as I can confirm the codes with my scanner. Really good tip about checking for debris and getting warranty coverage. I'll make sure to bring that up with my mechanic. Getting this sorted properly the first time around is definitely worth the investment, even if it hurts the wallet a bit. Thanks again for walking me through your experience, it's made me feel much more confident about what I'm dealing with. I'll update the thread once I get those error codes and confirm what's actually going on with my X6.
