BMW X4 Engine Issues: Stalling and Jerking Problems

Hey all! Having some concerning issues with my 2017 BMW X4 (gas model). The engine's acting up, stuttering at idle, stalling, and jerking during acceleration. Throttle response is weak and the check engine light is on. I suspect it might be the ignition coil, but I'd like to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. What was the actual problem in your case and how did your mechanic fix it? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I've got some experience with BMWs, had a similar issue with my 2015 BMW X3 last year. I'd say I have some experience working on cars, but I'm no pro. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with. After a bit of back and forth with my workshop, they found it was a loose connection in the wiring harness going to the throttle position sensor. The cable had worn out and wasn't making proper contact. Cost me around 95 Euro to get it sorted, and the car's been running smooth since then. Before jumping to conclusions about the ignition coil though, can you share more details about your X4? What's the mileage on it, and did this start happening suddenly or gradually? Also, have you had any other work done on it recently? This could help pinpoint the exact issue.

Thanks for the feedback! You're right about gathering more details. My X4 is at 47436 KM and just had its service last month. This issue started pretty suddenly, was driving fine one morning, and by evening, the problems kicked in. No other recent work besides regular maintenance. That wiring harness issue you mentioned is interesting, did you notice any warning signs before it completely acted up? The repair cost sounds reasonable if it fixes the problem. I'll definitely have my mechanic check the connections first before replacing any parts.

Hey again! Yeah, looking back at my X3's situation, there were actually some subtle signs before it went completely haywire. For about a week before the major problems, I noticed the engine would occasionally hesitate for a split second when accelerating from a stop, but it was so brief I brushed it off. Big mistake! What's interesting is that my issue also popped up pretty suddenly like yours, and I was also fresh off a regular service. At first, I was convinced it was the ignition coil too (which is why I initially responded to your post), but I'm glad my mechanic dug deeper. These electrical gremlins can be tricky to diagnose. Have you noticed any pattern to when the problems occur? Like, does it act up more when the engine's cold or after it's been running for a while? In my case, it was definitely worse when the engine was warm, which helped point to the wiring issue rather than the ignition coil. One thing I learned from my experience, don't let anyone rush to replace parts without properly diagnosing the root cause. It's worth getting a thorough diagnostic scan first. Saved me from unnecessarily replacing the ignition coil!

Thanks for sharing that detailed experience! That's exactly the kind of real-world insight I was hoping for. You're absolutely right about the temperature-related patterns, I've been paying closer attention since reading your response, and mine actually acts up more when the engine's warm too. Funny enough, it's most noticeable about 15-20 minutes into my drive. Really appreciate the tip about getting a proper diagnostic scan before replacing parts. I've booked an appointment with my mechanic for tomorrow morning and specifically mentioned checking the wiring harness and connections based on your experience. The whole "don't rush to replace parts" advice really resonates, was about to order an ignition coil online last night, but glad I held off! I'll definitely update the thread once I get it sorted out. Hoping it's just a wiring issue like yours was. These modern BMWs are great cars, but when electrical issues pop up, they sure can be tricky to diagnose! Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience in such detail.
