Thanks for sharing your experience. That's super helpful as it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with on my X3. I'm dreading it might be the complete unit like in your case. Would you mind sharing roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also curious if you've had any issues with it since the fix?

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, since I shared my experience earlier, I actually went ahead and got it fixed. The good news is it wasn't as bad as my initial repair. Turns out it was just the belt tensioner that was acting up, not the entire unit like I had in my previous X5. Got it sorted at the mechanic, they charged me 455€ for replacing the defective belt bringer/handover. Much better than what I paid last time! Since the fix, it's been working perfectly, no warning lights, no issues at all. The belt handover is now super smooth, just like when the car was new. Much cheaper this time around compared to my previous experience where they had to replace the whole unit. Definitely worth getting it checked out, sometimes these things aren't as bad as we fear! Really glad I could help you out with this. These BMW belt systems can be tricky, but once fixed properly, they usually stay reliable. Let me know how yours turns out!

Thanks a lot for the update! I finally took my car to the mechanic last week. Like you mentioned, keeping fingers crossed helped, it wasn't as terrible as I feared. The mechanic found a loose connection and just needed to replace a small wire that had corroded over time. Much cheaper fix than I expected! Got it done in about an hour and only paid 150 for parts and labor. Pretty relieved it wasn't the complete unit. Everything's working smoothly now, the belt handover is doing its job perfectly, and that annoying warning light is finally gone. Really appreciate you sharing your experiences. It helped me understand what I might be dealing with and gave me confidence to get it checked out rather than putting it off. These luxury car repairs can be scary on the wallet, but sometimes we get lucky with the simple fixes!

I had the exact same issue with my 2009 BMW X5 3.0i last year. The belt handover mechanism completely failed, and the warning light kept coming on. My experience at the garage revealed it wasn't just the tensioner, the entire belt bringer motor unit had failed. The technician found that the small electric motor that extends and retracts the arm was burnt out, and replacing just the motor wasn't possible. The whole assembly needed replacement. It turned out to be a fairly serious issue because it's a safety component. The repair wasn't optional since the system is part of the car's passive safety features. The fix involved replacing the complete belt handover unit and reprogramming the system. The job took about 2-3 hours at the shop. If you're experiencing similar symptoms, I'd recommend getting it checked soon. These systems tend to fail in similar ways across the E83 platform BMWs.
