BMW X2 Exhaust Issues: Multiple Red Flags Explained

Thanks for sharing your experience! My X2 just hit 191,319 KM and had its last service about 3 months ago. The symptoms actually seem to get worse during cold starts and when I accelerate hard. The exhaust smell is particularly strong when idling in the morning. Your lambda sensor issue sounds very similar to what I'm experiencing, I'll definitely have my mechanic check that first. Hoping it's just that and not something more serious with the catalytic converter. I'd rather not break the bank right now!

Hey again! Yes, those cold start symptoms and strong exhaust smell while idling totally rings a bell, that's exactly how my X1 was acting up. After reading about your mileage and symptoms, I'm even more convinced we had the same issue. The lambda sensor replacement sorted mine out completely. Just a heads up though, when I first noticed the symptoms, I made the mistake of waiting too long to get it fixed. The faulty sensor ended up making my car run rich (too much fuel), which wasn't great for fuel economy. Was burning through a tank way faster than usual. One thing you could check before heading to the mechanic, try to listen for any hissing sounds near the exhaust manifold when the engine's warm. If you hear that, along with the strong smell you mentioned, it's another sign pointing to the lambda sensor. Since you mentioned the catalytic converter, my mechanic actually checked mine during the repair and said it was still good. Apparently, catching the lambda sensor issue early enough prevented any damage to the cat. Really hope that's the case for you too! Let us know what your mechanic finds. These BMWs can be tricky, but once you sort out the sensor issue, they run like a dream again.

Thanks so much for all that detailed info, it's super helpful! I just checked for that hissing sound you mentioned and yep, I can definitely hear it. I've also noticed my fuel consumption has gone way up lately, which matches what you said about running rich. I'm calling my mechanic first thing tomorrow to get this sorted. You've saved me a lot of worry about the catalytic converter! I'll make sure they specifically check the lambda sensor. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and those diagnostic tips. Will definitely update the thread once I get it fixed. Fingers crossed it's as straightforward as your repair was!

The fault code 180001 on a BMW X5 40E hybrid typically relates to the engine's fuel system, possibly indicating an issue with the fuel pressure or fuel pump. Start by checking the fuel pump and fuel pressure sensor for any signs of malfunction. If you're not comfortable with these checks, it's best to have a professional mechanic inspect the vehicle, as fuel system issues can affect vehicle performance and safety. Let us know how it goes or if you have further questions!

Check the fuel pump relay and fuses first, as these are simpler components that can cause similar issues if they fail. If these are intact, it might be necessary to inspect the fuel pump itself. Keep us updated on your progress or if you need more assistance!

Hey there! I had a pretty similar situation with my 2016 BMW X1 last year (I'm a casual DIYer with some basic experience). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through, my X1 was acting up the same way. It turned out to be a faulty lambda sensor, which was giving incorrect readings to the ECU. I took it to my regular workshop since this was beyond my comfort zone. The diagnostic confirmed the lambda sensor was shot, and they replaced it. Total bill came to about 375 Euro, but it fixed all those issues, the rough idle, poor acceleration, and that annoying check engine light all disappeared. What's your mileage on the X2? Also, have you noticed any specific conditions when these symptoms get worse (like cold starts or after highway driving)? Knowing these details would help compare if we're dealing with the same issue, since BMWs from this generation can have similar patterns.
