BMW X2 Emergency Call System Failure, Battery Issue?

Hey everyone! My 2021 BMW X2 (gas engine) has been acting up with the emergency call system. Getting an error code, no warning message on the dash, and the emergency call feature barely works. I suspect the emergency call battery might be dead. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? Mainly wondering what your mechanic found and how they fixed it. Any insights on repair costs or time would be great too. Thanks in advance!

Hi there! I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW X1 last year. I have some basic car maintenance experience, but I usually leave the complex stuff to the pros. The symptoms were exactly like yours, emergency call system acting weird and not functioning properly. Took it to my regular workshop, and yep, it was the emergency battery that was completely drained. Apparently, these backup batteries have a limited lifespan and need replacement once they're dead. The fix wasn't too complicated, they replaced the battery unit, ran some system checks, and I was good to go. Cost me around 110 Euro including labor. Before I can share more specific details though, could you tell me if you're getting any specific error codes? Also, how long have you noticed this issue, and does the system work at all or is it completely dead? This info would help me give you more relevant advice based on my experience with the X1.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm getting error code ID3213 on my X2, and it's been happening for about two weeks now. The system occasionally works but mostly gives me trouble. My last service was just a month ago at 26121 KM, so it's a bit frustrating to have issues already. They didn't mention anything about the emergency call battery during the service, which I guess they should have checked. The system sometimes connects but drops immediately, super annoying when you're trying to test if it works. Did your battery replacement fix the issue completely?

Hey again! Yeah, I totally understand your frustration. When I had this issue with my X1, I got pretty much the same error code, and the intermittent connection problem sounds exactly like what I experienced. The whole dropping connection thing was super annoying, I remember trying to test it multiple times and getting nowhere. After getting the battery replaced, everything worked perfectly fine. Haven't had a single issue since then. It's kind of weird that they didn't catch this during your service though, when I mentioned the problem to my mechanic, they said it's actually a pretty common issue in these models. The emergency call battery is separate from the main car battery, and they're supposed to check it during routine maintenance. Given that your car's fairly new with low mileage, you might want to check if this is covered under warranty. Mine wasn't because it was older, but you might get lucky. The fix itself is pretty straightforward once they get to it, took them about an hour to sort everything out. Just a heads up though, after they replace the battery, make sure they run a full system test. My mechanic did this, and it helped ensure everything was properly integrated with the car's systems. Have you noticed any other electrical quirks along with this issue?

Thanks so much for the detailed info! That's really helpful to know about your experience, especially about the warranty possibility, I hadn't even thought about that. You're right, I should definitely check since my X2 is still pretty new. I haven't noticed any other electrical issues, which is good news I guess. I'll give my dealer a call tomorrow and mention the battery replacement fix you had done. It's reassuring to hear it was a straightforward fix for you and that it completely solved the problem. Good tip about making sure they do a full system test too, I'll definitely bring that up when I take it in. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all this info. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who's dealt with this annoying emergency call system issue. Fingers crossed it'll be covered under warranty!
