Thanks for sharing your experience! That really helps as it sounds exactly like what I'm going through. I'm definitely going to get it checked by a specialist after hearing about your case. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? I want to make sure I budget properly and know what to expect.

Hey! Just wanted to follow up on your questions. I paid around 250 € for the electrical bypass valve replacement, including labor. The mechanic diagnosed it correctly as a boost pressure actuator fault, and I'm happy to report it's been running like a dream since the fix. No other issues have popped up in the last year, the engine's performing beautifully, fuel economy is back to normal, and those annoying whistling noises are completely gone. The idle is smooth as silk now, and I've got all my power back. It was definitely worth every penny getting it sorted by a proper specialist. Just make sure you get it fixed sooner rather than later. I learned that leaving these kinds of issues can lead to bigger problems with the turbo, which would've cost way more to repair. The specialist I went to really knew their stuff with BMWs, and that made all the difference. Hope this helps with your budgeting! Let us know how you get on with the repair.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies! I wanted to update you on what happened. I took your advice and visited a BMW specialist yesterday. The diagnosis was spot-on, it was indeed the boost pressure actuator causing all the trouble. I got it fixed right away, and honestly, the difference is like night and day. The repair came to about 300€ total, which wasn't as bad as I'd feared. The mechanic was really thorough and even showed me the faulty part. They found some minor wear on the turbo too, but thankfully caught it early enough to prevent any serious damage. Took it for a proper drive today and what a relief! The engine's running smoothly again, no more weird noises, and the power's fully restored. Even the fuel consumption seems to be improving already. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. Sometimes it pays to spend a bit more at a specialist rather than trying to save money with cheaper options. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction, you saved me from potentially bigger problems down the road!

I had almost identical issues with my 2015 BMW X3 20d last year. The symptoms were spot on with yours, power loss, rough idle, whistling, and that dreaded check engine light. My previous car suffered from a faulty electrical bypass valve, which controls the turbo pressure. The mechanic showed me that the actuator wasn't responding properly to electronic signals. This was causing inconsistent boost pressure, explaining both the power loss and the whistling sound. It turned out to be quite a serious issue that needed immediate attention to prevent potential turbo damage. The repair involved replacing the entire bypass valve assembly and recalibrating the engine management system. The repair took about 4-5 hours to complete. The symptoms improved immediately after the fix, no more whistling, smooth idle, and proper power delivery. Fuel consumption returned to normal within the next tank. My advice? Get a second opinion from a BMW specialist. These symptoms shouldn't be ignored as they can lead to more expensive repairs if left unchecked.
