BMW Diesel 2016: Black smoke, drop in performance and failed DPF regeneration

Have any of you ever had problems with a 2016 BMW 2 series diesel where black smoke comes out of the exhaust when accelerating, the check engine light comes on, engine power decreases and DPF regeneration fails? I have also noticed a strong exhaust smell. I think it could be due to the partial diesel particulate filter (DPF) which is heavily loaded. Can you share your experiences with me, especially how you fixed this at the garage? What tips can you give for troubleshooting?

Well, I had a similar problem with my 2014 BMW 3 Series diesel. As I said, I'm not a mechanic, but it could actually be the diesel particulate filter. In my case, the diesel particulate filter was defective due to high mileage. I had to have it repaired in a workshop and paid 1550 euros for it. It wasn't a pleasant experience, but since then my car has been running perfectly again. I would need more information about your vehicle to give you exact details. Did the problems occur suddenly or have you noticed them for some time? What is the mileage? With more information, I may be able to help you better.

Thanks for your reply! Yes, the problems have suddenly appeared. Everything was fine before, at least I didn't notice anything. The mileage is now 90850 km. I've heard that the DPF often causes problems after a certain number of kilometers... hence my assumption. Of course, 1550 euros doesn't sound so good, but if that actually solves the problem, I probably won't have any other choice. Do you know a good garage that you could recommend to me? And what other information is important to give you more precise details?

Hi, I think I might be able to add something to this. In my experience, your mileage actually matches a possible problem with the DPF. It was similar for me, around 90000 to 100000 km we had the same problem. So your suspicion could fit pretty well. The 1550 euros weren't exactly a bargain, but the car has been running like a kitten ever since. The garage I went to at the time was Meisterhaft Autoreparatur in my town. I can't tell you exactly what they did - something about DPF cleaning and a few other maintenance jobs, but I can't tell you exactly what off the top of my head. As for other information, it might be helpful to know whether you mostly drive on the highway or in the city - that can sometimes have an effect. By the way, have you tried driving a longer trip at a constantly high speed on the highway? Sometimes this can help to burn off the DPF a little. Of course, only if you feel comfortable with it and it doesn't cause further damage to the car! Safety first. Good luck in any case!

Thanks for your advice! I mostly drive in the city as I live close to my work. I've heard the same thing about driving longer on the highway, but honestly, I was afraid it might make things worse. After your comment, maybe I should give it a try after all. But yes, you're right, safety first. I think I'll try contacting the garage first and see what they say. Maybe I can also pass on your tips to them. So far I've always been satisfied with their work. It reassures me a little to hear that people have had similar problems and have found a solution. Thank you for your help!
