BMW Brake Warning Lights? ABS and ESP Fixes & Costs

Hi everyone! Need your advice on a potential brake issue with my 2016 BMW 4 Diesel (61K km). My brake pedal feels weird lately and I'm getting multiple warning lights including ESP, ABS, and brake indicators. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Would appreciate recommendations on getting this sorted. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW 3 Series 320d. The symptoms you're describing match exactly what I experienced last month, multiple warning lights and that strange brake pedal feel. Took it to the garage and turns out it was an undervoltage problem affecting the ABS module. The battery wasn't providing enough power to the system, causing those warning lights to pop up. The battery voltage was dropping below the threshold needed for proper brake system operation. In my case, they had to replace the battery and recalibrate the ABS module. While it wasn't the most serious issue, it's definitely not something you want to ignore since it affects your braking system. The fix wasn't too complicated, but it required specific diagnostic equipment to properly reset all systems. My advice would be to get it checked soon, these symptoms usually don't fix themselves and could potentially get worse. Make sure to find a garage that specializes in BMW electronics, as they'll need the right diagnostic tools to properly identify and fix the issue. Hope this helps with your decision. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Glad you got it sorted out. I was wondering how much you ended up paying for the battery replacement and recalibration? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix? I'm trying to get an idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and if there's anything else I should watch out for.

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up on your questions. Yeah, everything's been running perfectly since I got it fixed, no more warning lights or weird brake pedal feel. The whole undervoltage issue set me back 240 € which covered the diagnosis and repairs. I'd say it was worth every penny for the peace of mind. While they were checking things out, they also noticed my brakes were pretty worn (good timing, right?), so I had those done too. The brake fix was separate from the undervoltage problem, but I'm glad they caught it, better safe than sorry! Been driving for about six weeks now since the repairs and honestly, the car feels like new. The braking is super responsive and all those annoying warning lights are gone for good. No other issues to watch out for so far, seems like they got to the root of the problem. If you're still hesitant about where to take it, I'd be happy to chat more about my experience with the repair. These electrical gremlins can be tricky, but once you get them sorted, you're usually good to go!

Thanks for all the detailed info! I actually just got back from the mechanic today. Turns out my issue was different, had a faulty ABS sensor that needed replacing. The repair cost was a bit higher than yours, around 400 for parts and labor, but at least it's fixed now. The mechanic I found was actually great, super transparent about everything and even showed me the old sensor. He explained how these sensors can fail over time and mess with all the warning systems. They did a full diagnostic check and thankfully found no other issues. Got to test drive it afterward and wow, what a difference! The brake pedal feels normal again, and all those annoying warning lights are gone. Such a relief to have this sorted. Really appreciate your help in pushing me to get it checked out quickly. Nothing worse than driving around worried about your brakes! Guess I'll mark this one down as a lesson learned, don't wait around when brake warning lights start popping up. Thanks again for sharing your experience, helped me feel more confident about getting it fixed.
