Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, curious if you've had any other electrical gremlins pop up since they fixed it? I want to make sure I budget properly and know what to look out for.

Hey there! Happy to help with those details. The alarm system repair turned out great, zero issues since they fixed it. The whole thing, including the coding of the optical locking signals with the indicators, came to just 45€. Pretty reasonable considering how annoying the problem was! And nope, absolutely no other electrical problems have shown up since the repair. The car's working exactly as it should, locks respond perfectly, alarm arms and disarms like it's supposed to, and those indicator lights flash just right when I lock up. It was definitely worth getting it sorted by a proper BMW specialist. Honestly, it was such a relief to get it fixed. Nothing worse than wondering if your car's security system is actually working or not! If you're getting similar symptoms to what I had, I'd say go for it, just make sure you use someone who knows their way around BMW's electrical systems.

Thanks so much for all the great info! Just got back from the mechanic today actually. Took your advice and found a shop specializing in European cars. You were spot on, it was the alarm control module causing all the trouble. The repair was a bit pricier than yours though, parts and labor came to about double what you paid. But honestly, it was worth every penny. The mechanic was super thorough and even showed me the corroded wiring they found while doing the work. Everything's working perfectly now, the fob, central locking, alarm, the whole system. Such a relief to have it sorted! Really appreciate you sharing your experience. It helped me feel more confident about getting it fixed instead of putting it off and worrying about it. Best decision I've made for the car in a while. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

Just dealt with this on my 2008 BMW 5-series last month. The symptoms were identical to what you're describing, complete alarm system failure, no response from the fob, and security light staying on. Turned out the alarm control module had failed, and there was some corrosion on the wiring connectors. The module needed replacing, and they had to recode the new unit to sync with the car's systems. It wasn't a quick fix since they had to remove parts of the interior trim to access everything, but it wasn't super complicated either. The shop had to use specialized diagnostic equipment to properly program the new module. Make sure wherever you take it has experience with BMW security systems, not all shops can handle the coding part. It's definitely worth fixing since it affects not just the alarm but also the central locking system. Been working perfectly since the repair, no issues with the locks or alarm system anymore.
