BMW Airbag Warning Light Stuck? Here's What To Check

Hey all! Having trouble with my 2017 BMW 2 diesel. The airbag warning light stays on in the dash and the driver's airbag isn't working. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? Wondering what the repair process was like and what it ended up costing. Any insights would be helpful.

Hey! I know exactly what you're talking about. I have some experience with cars and had a similar issue with my 2015 BMW 3 Series diesel (also worked on a BMW 5 Series briefly). The airbag warning light drove me crazy too! Turned out it was a faulty wiring connection under the driver's seat. My mechanic found that the plug connector was loose and slightly corroded. The whole fix, including diagnostic and repair, cost me 95 Euro. Mind sharing if you hear any clicking sounds under the seat when you move it back and forth? Also, has your car had any water damage or been detailed recently? These details would help determine if you're dealing with the same issue. Don't drive around too long with this problem though, safety first! What's your exact model spec? That would help me give you more specific advice.

Thanks for your detailed response! Just had my service done last month at 107,416 KM. Actually, yes, I do hear that clicking noise when adjusting the seat! No water damage that I know of, but I had it detailed about three weeks ago. I'm a bit relieved to hear it might just be a wiring issue rather than having to replace the entire airbag system. Were you able to drive while waiting for the repair, or did the mechanic advise against it?

Hey again! Good to hear back from you. Yeah, that clicking sound is exactly what I experienced, it's usually a tell-tale sign of that wiring connection issue I mentioned. Since you had it detailed recently, there's a good chance some moisture got into the connector under the seat. That happens more often than you'd think! In my case, I did drive the car for about a week before getting it fixed, but honestly, I wouldn't recommend it. My mechanic later told me off for that, apparently, it's not just about the airbag not working, but there's a small risk of it deploying unexpectedly if the wiring is really messed up. Not worth the risk, looking back. The repair itself was pretty quick, took about an hour once they got to it. Since you're at 107K km, it's about the same mileage where I had my issue. These connectors just tend to get loose and corroded over time, especially with seat movement. Quick tip: while you're waiting for the repair, try not to adjust the seat position too much. That clicking sound means the wiring harness is moving around, which could make the problem worse. Get it checked out soon, it's definitely not something you want to leave for too long!

Thanks so much for all this info, you've really put my mind at ease! I'll definitely take your advice and get it looked at ASAP. Think I'll call my mechanic first thing tomorrow and stop messing with the seat adjustments until then. Better safe than sorry, especially when it comes to airbags! Really appreciate you sharing your experience, saved me a lot of worry about potentially needing a whole new airbag system. Will probably follow up with you after I get it checked out, just to let you know if it was the same issue. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out with this!
