BMW 7 Diesel Running Rough? Troubleshooting Help Needed

Hi everyone! My '04 BMW 7 diesel (78k km) is giving me headaches. The engine runs rough, especially when I hit the gas, and it jerks forward during acceleration. Response is sluggish, and now the check engine light has joined the party. Pretty sure it's misfiring, but after a recent disappointing experience with a mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your experiences and recommendations for getting this sorted properly. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had nearly identical issues with my '07 BMW 5 Series diesel last year. The symptoms you're describing match exactly what I experienced, rough running, jerky acceleration, and poor throttle response. My check engine light was also flashing. Turned out I had a faulty fuel injector in cylinder 2. These electronically controlled injectors can fail over time, leading to incomplete combustion and misfires. I had mine diagnosed at the garage using their diagnostic computer, and it clearly showed injector problems. The fix required replacing the defective injector and recalibrating the injection system. It was definitely a serious repair that needed immediate attention, running with a bad injector can damage your engine and catalytic converter if left unchecked. After the repair, the difference was night and day, smooth power delivery returned and all the warning lights cleared up. My suggestion would be to get it properly diagnosed at a shop that specializes in diesel engines, as they'll have the right diagnostic equipment for these issues. Hope this helps with your decision making!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That sounds exactly like what I'm going through. My fuel injector problems were driving me nuts too, and it's reassuring to hear I'm not the only one who's dealt with this. Did you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? The way you described that smooth power delivery after fixing it sounds amazing right now. Can't wait to get mine running properly again.

Hey again! Yeah, I remember exactly what I paid, it was 515 € for the whole job, including the new injector and all the work to recalibrate the system. Honestly, considering how much better the car runs now, it was worth every penny. Since getting it fixed at the mechanic, it's been running like a dream! The combustion misfires that were showing up on the diagnostic are completely gone, and that jerky acceleration is history. It's such a relief to have smooth power delivery again, feels like a completely different car. No other issues have popped up since the repair, which was about 8 months ago now. Just regular maintenance stuff. The mechanic mentioned these injectors typically last quite a while once replaced, so hopefully, you'll have the same experience once you get yours sorted. Trust me, once you get it fixed, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. That smooth acceleration feels amazing after dealing with all that roughness! Let me know how it goes when you get it sorted!

Just wanted to update everyone, I got my BMW fixed and wow, what a difference! Took it to a diesel specialist who diagnosed the injector issue right away. Funny enough, the whole experience wasn't nearly as painful as I'd feared after my last mechanic disaster. The repair cost me a bit more than yours, around 600 for parts and labor, but honestly, it was totally worth it. The car drives like new now! No more jerking or rough running, and that annoying check engine light is finally off. The mechanic was super professional and even showed me the old injector, it was pretty worn out. Best part? They had it done in just a day. Picked it up yesterday afternoon and had the smoothest drive home. It's amazing how you get used to a problem until it's fixed, then you realize just how bad it was. No more white-knuckling it every time I need to accelerate! Thanks again for your advice, it really helped me make the right call. Here's hoping both our BMWs keep running smoothly for a long time!

I have a BMW M5 E60, I get "loss of power" I have taken the car countless times to the official BMW service center and they do not know how to fix it. What's wrong with it? What's the solution? What is the best BMW workshop in Spain?

Start by checking the basics: ensure your air filter is clean and not clogged, as this can restrict airflow and cause power loss. If the air filter is fine, the issue might be more complex, such as a problem with the fuel system or ignition coils. Since you've already visited the official service center, consider seeking a second opinion from a reputable independent BMW specialist in your area. They might have more experience with specific issues related to the M5 E60. Keep us updated on your progress, and feel free to ask if you have more questions!
