BMW 6 Series Engine Jerking: Solutions & Expert Help

Hey car enthusiasts, need your advice with my 2005 BMW 6 Series (gasoline). The engine's been acting up lately, jerking while driving and running with reduced power. Got a fault code stored in the system too. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual issue and how much did repairs cost? Would really appreciate recommendations on trustworthy mechanics who know their way around BMWs. Car details: 2005 BMW 6 Series, Gasoline engine, 62,070 km Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I can relate to your situation. I had similar issues with my 2008 BMW 5 Series last year. The symptoms you're describing remind me of what I experienced after getting a third-party chip tune. My car was jerking and went into limp mode several times. Turned out the aftermarket tuning had messed with the engine control unit (ECU) and damaged some sensors. The dealership had to reset the entire system and replace two oxygen sensors. It was definitely a serious job as they had to flash the ECU back to factory settings. My advice would be to go straight to a certified BMW specialist rather than a general mechanic. They'll have the proper diagnostic tools and know exactly what to look for. In my case, it wasn't just a simple fix, they needed special equipment to reprogram everything correctly. By the way, don't ignore these symptoms. Running the engine with improper tuning can lead to bigger problems down the line. Better to get it sorted now than risk more damage.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, that's really helpful! My situation does sound quite similar to what you went through. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair job? Also, has everything been running smoothly since they fixed it, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? I want to make sure I'm prepared for what might be coming my way financially.

Hey again! Great to hear back from you. Just wanted to update you, I actually got my car fixed last week and it turned out to be exactly what I suspected. The fault code was definitely related to that third-party chip tuning I mentioned before. The mechanic found that the aftermarket tune was causing conflicts with the ECU. Cost me 180 € to get it sorted, they had to remove the faulty programming and restore the factory settings. Money well spent though, because my car's running like a dream now! No more jerking or power issues whatsoever. I've put about 500 km on it since the repair and haven't had a single problem. The engine's running super smooth, just like it should. Honestly, I've learned my lesson about those cheaper third-party tunes, sometimes they end up costing more in the long run! If you're still dealing with similar symptoms, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out ASAP. Better to catch these things early before they cause any serious damage to the engine. Let me know how it goes with yours!

Thanks everyone for your input! Just wanted to update you all on what happened with my BMW. Finally took it to a specialist mechanic yesterday, turns out it was an issue with the mass airflow sensor and a loose connection in the wiring harness. Definitely not as bad as I feared! The whole repair job, including diagnostic tests and labor, came to around 350. A bit pricey, but way better than what I was expecting after hearing some horror stories. The mechanic I found was actually great, super transparent about everything and even showed me the faulty parts. Car's running beautifully now, no more jerking or power issues. Really glad I didn't put off getting it checked. Sometimes these BMWs can be tricky, but getting the right mechanic to look at them makes all the difference. Thanks again for all the advice, really helped me make the right decision. Time to enjoy some smooth driving again!
