BMW 4 Series MAP Sensor Issues: Sluggish Engine Alert

Need advice: MAP sensor issues on 2021 BMW 4 Series Diesel? My car's been acting up lately, check engine light is on, engine feels sluggish, and I'm burning through fuel faster than usual. Pretty sure it's the manifold pressure sensor acting up. Had a bad experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Car details: 2021 BMW 4 Series, Diesel engine, 50,185 km on the clock Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was your repair experience like and how much did it cost? Looking for recommendations on reliable mechanics who know their way around BMW sensors.

I had nearly identical symptoms on my 2018 BMW 3 Series diesel last month. Initially thought it was just the MAP sensor, but my mechanic found a significant vacuum leak at the intercooler connection. The rubber hose had developed a crack and was causing false readings on the MAP sensor. The symptoms matched yours exactly, poor performance, high fuel consumption, and that annoying check engine light. It turned out to be quite serious because the engine was getting incorrect air-fuel mixtures, which could've led to bigger problems if left unfixed. The repair involved replacing the cracked hose and cleaning the MAP sensor, as it had gotten contaminated from the unfiltered air entering through the leak. The car's running like new now, proper throttle response and normal fuel consumption. Based on your symptoms, I'd recommend getting it checked soon. MAP sensor issues often indicate a larger underlying problem with the air intake system. Any decent BMW specialist should be able to diagnose this with their diagnostic equipment.

Thanks for sharing that experience! Glad you got it sorted. It's helpful to know about that intercooler connection, might have to get mine checked too. Would you mind telling me roughly what you ended up paying for the whole fix? Also, has everything been running smoothly since, or have you noticed any other quirks?

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. After taking your advice, I got my BMW checked out, and you were spot on, it was indeed the MAP sensor causing trouble, but there was also a significant vacuum leak that needed fixing. The mechanic sorted both issues, and I ended up paying 235 € for the whole job, which included fixing that pesky vacuum leak. I'm really pleased to report that everything's been running like a dream since the repair. The engine's got its punch back, and I'm not hemorrhaging fuel anymore! It's such a relief to see my normal fuel consumption numbers again. The sluggishness is completely gone, and that annoying check engine light hasn't made a reappearance. Looking back, I'm actually grateful for your post because it pushed me to get it checked out before it turned into something more serious. These BMWs are fantastic machines when they're running right, aren't they? If you're still having issues, I'd definitely recommend getting it looked at, better safe than sorry with these kinds of symptoms.

Thanks for the update! Really glad to hear you got it all sorted out. That's actually a pretty reasonable price for the fix, I was worried it would be way more expensive. I finally took my car to the mechanic yesterday after putting it off for a while. Turns out it was pretty similar to what you experienced, vacuum leak and a dirty MAP sensor. Got it all fixed up for about 280 €. The mechanic I found was actually great, super transparent about what needed fixing and didn't try to upsell me on unnecessary stuff. The car's running beautifully now, way better acceleration and my fuel consumption is back to normal. Such a relief to have that sorted! Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it definitely helped me make the decision to get it checked out sooner rather than later.
