Thanks! I've got a 320d with 81779 KM on the clock. Just had it serviced last month too. Your experience sounds exactly like what I'm going through. That price tag is a bit scary, but I guess it's better than letting it get worse. Did you notice any warning signs before the DPF light started showing up? Also, how long did the whole repair process take? Just trying to plan ahead since I need the car for work.

Hey again! Funny you mention the warning signs, with my 5 Series, I actually did notice a few things before the DPF light came on. The car started feeling a bit hesitant during acceleration, especially on cold mornings. Also, my fuel consumption went up slightly, but I didn't think much of it at the time. Looking back, these were definitely early warning signs. For my repair, I was without the car for about 3 days. The actual DPF replacement only took a day, but my mechanic wanted to do some additional checks to make sure there weren't any underlying issues causing the premature clogging. Your mileage is actually quite low for a DPF failure, mine had about 130,000 KM when it went. Just a heads up, since you mentioned you just had it serviced, might be worth checking if they did an oil change. My mechanic explained that using the wrong oil specification can sometimes contribute to DPF problems. Also, have you been doing mostly short trips? That can prevent the filter from doing its regeneration cycles properly. The price is steep, yeah, but honestly, it's worth getting it sorted properly rather than trying cheaper fixes that might not last. Since getting mine replaced, I haven't had a single DPF-related issue in the past 18 months. Let me know what you decide to do!

Thanks for all that detailed info! You know what, I'm definitely seeing those same warning signs you mentioned, the sluggish acceleration and higher fuel consumption make total sense now. I've actually been doing lots of short trips lately because of my new work schedule, which probably hasn't helped. Just called my mechanic and booked it in for next week. You're right about doing it properly rather than looking for cheaper alternatives. Can't really risk more damage or having it fail again soon. Three days without the car isn't ideal, but I can probably work from home those days. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, especially about checking the oil specs, I'll definitely bring that up with the mechanic. Here's hoping mine runs as smoothly as yours after the repair! Thanks again for all the help.

I was at BMW, and they installed something on the exhaust system of my X3 F25 (built in 2013). Since then, it's showing a limited remaining range for the particulate filter.

It's possible that the installation included a software update or a sensor that monitors the DPF's condition more closely. To address the limited remaining range warning, try taking your car on a longer drive at highway speeds to allow the DPF to regenerate. If the warning persists, it might be worth revisiting the dealership to ensure everything was installed correctly and to check if the DPF needs further attention. Let me know how it goes or if you have more questions!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and I faced almost the exact same issue with my 2010 BMW 5 Series diesel (had a look at your post history but couldn't see which 3 Series model you've got). The symptoms were identical, DPF light, sluggish performance, and that annoying smoke. Took it to my trusted mechanic who confirmed the DPF was completely clogged. They tried regeneration first, but it was too far gone. Ended up needing a full replacement, cost me around 1550 Euro, ouch! But it's been running like a dream since then. Which specific 3 Series do you have (320d, 330d)? The repair process might differ a bit depending on the engine. Also, how many miles/kilometers are on your car? Might help figure out if it's just regular wear or if something else is causing premature DPF failure.
