Black smoke and loss of power with Citroen C1 Diesel - experience and solutions wanted

Hi guys, I need to ask your opinion on something. My 2008 Citroen C1 Diesel, which already has almost 95,000 kilometers on it, is doing some worrying things. Black smoke when accelerating, engine light on, noticeable loss of power and the engine is running rough. I've also noticed that the DPF regeneration isn't working and fuel consumption has shot up. I didn't have a good experience on my last visit to the mechanic, so I thought I'd ask here if anyone has had similar experiences. I suspect the differential pressure from the diesel particulate filter may be too low. Have any of you ever had symptoms like this on your diesel vehicle? If so, what did you do and what were your experiences with the mechanic? Many thanks in advance!

Hello, I had a similar problem with my 2005 Citroen C3 Diesel. The same symptoms as yours came to light, including the black smoke and the engine light. After a thorough investigation, it turned out that the diesel particulate filter (DPF) was actually defective. The DPF regeneration was no longer working properly and this was also causing the increased consumption and loss of power. It was definitely a serious problem and needed to be addressed immediately as it could severely damage the vehicle if ignored. To solve the problem, the DPF had to be removed and replaced with a new one. The mechanic then also checked again that the engine control unit was working correctly to prevent further problems. It was quite time-consuming, but in the end it got the car running again. So, in my experience, I would suggest that you see a mechanic urgently to have a closer look. It's not a small problem and the longer you wait, the worse it can get. Good luck with that, hopefully it's not too bad.

Hey, thanks for the detailed answer. It seems to be a really common problem with diesel particulate filters. Do you remember how much the whole procedure cost you? And can any garage do it or do I have to go to a specialist Citroen workshop? And did you have any additional problems afterwards or did everything go smoothly? Thank you in advance!

Hello, sure, I remember the costs well. Well, I had to pay 1550 euros to get the problem with the diesel particulate filter under control. Definitely not a small sum, but since then the car has been running without any problems. I went to a normal garage back then, you don't necessarily have to go to a Citroen specialist garage as long as the mechanic knows what he's doing. Of course, it's always good if he has a bit more experience with diesel. After the repair, I had no further problems and the smoky exhaust is also history. The differential pressure of the diesel particulate filter was too low and, as suspected, the mechanic fixed it and since then consumption has also returned to normal. I hope it goes smoothly for you too. Fingers crossed!

Hey, that sounds expensive, but if it gets the car running again without any problems, then it's definitely worth it. I think I'll look for a good garage in my area. Hopefully I'll have the same luck as you and there won't be any more problems. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for your help! Fingers crossed that it's just the diesel particulate filter and the replacement goes smoothly. See you then!
