Audi S8 Transmission Failure from Faulty Shift Lock

My 2019 S8 is showing transmission issues that have me concerned. When trying to start the car, nothing happens, and the check engine light illuminates. The transmission also exhibits poor shifting behavior and gear slippage. The diagnostic scan shows transmission-related fault codes. I suspect the shift lock mechanism in park position might be defective, as the car seems to have trouble recognizing when its properly in park. Has anyone experienced similar transmission failure symptoms, particularly with the parking position? If so, what was the actual problem and how was it resolved by your mechanic? Looking to understand the potential repair scope and common fixes before heading to the shop.

Having some experience with transmission repair issues, I dealt with a very similar problem on my 2017 S7. The symptoms you describe match closely with what I encountered, especially the shift lock and gear recognition problems. The transmission issues turned out to be related to a defective control unit that was causing communication problems between the transmission and other vehicle systems. After multiple diagnostic scans, my workshop confirmed the automatic transmission control module needed replacement. The entire repair, including parts and labor, cost around 1000 Euro. The tricky part with transmission issues like this is that symptoms can be similar for different root causes. Before proceeding with your repair, it would be helpful to know: 1. Have you noticed any metallic sounds during gear changes? 2. Does the gear linkage feel loose when shifting? 3. Are there any specific fault codes you can share? 4. Has there been any recent transmission maintenance? 5. How many miles/kilometers are on the vehicle? These details would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with the control unit or if its potentially something different in the transmission system. The gear slippage you mention is particularly concerning and should be addressed quickly to prevent potential damage to other transmission components.

Last service performed at 124000KM included transmission fluid change. Currently at 129184KM. The transmission problems turned out to be a faulty gear shifter solenoid causing intermittent communication errors with the transmission control module. When moving from neutral position to park, the transmission would sometimes fail to properly engage the shift lock mechanism. The repair involved replacing both the solenoid assembly and the gear linkage bushings which had worn prematurely. Total repair cost was 850 Euro and resolved all shifting issues completely. The check engine light hasnt returned since the fix. For others experiencing similar symptoms, always make sure to get a proper diagnostic scan done, as gear shifter problems can mimic more serious transmission issues.

Thanks for sharing the resolution, this really helps confirm what I suspected with my similar case. The faulty gear shifter solenoid seems to be a common failure point in these transmissions around the 120-130K kilometer mark. My automatic transmission had nearly identical symptoms, and I also found that worn linkage bushings contributed to the shift lock issues. The repair cost was in the same range, I paid 890 Euro for a very similar fix including parts and labor. This reinforces that not all transmission failure symptoms point to major internal problems. The gear shifter solenoid is a relatively straightforward repair compared to internal transmission work. Looking back, the key indicator was how the shift lock would intermittently fail to engage properly when going into park position. Since having the solenoid and bushings replaced, my transmission has been shifting smoothly with no recurring issues. Regular transmission fluid changes seem critical in preventing premature wear of these components. For anyone else facing these symptoms, get a proper diagnostic before assuming the worst about transmission repair costs. Often the root cause is in the external control components rather than the transmission internals.

My transmission sensor issue has been fully resolved, and I wanted to update everyone on the final outcome since it might help others with similar problems. The automatic transmission now shifts smoothly, and the check engine light hasnt returned since the fix. For others experiencing similar symptoms, always make sure to get a proper diagnostic scan done, as gear shifter problems can mimic more serious transmission issues. My case proves that not every transmission warning sign means a complete system failure.
