Audi S3 Key Turn Issues: Ignition Switch May Be Failing

Having trouble with my 2010 Audi S3 (155k km, gasoline) that wont start properly anymore. The ignition switch seems suspicious since turning the key sometimes results in no response at all. When the engine does start, it runs rough and occasionally shuts off while driving. Had a bad experience with my last mechanic and looking for advice before taking it to another shop. Has anyone dealt with similar starting issues on their S3? Would be great to hear about your experiences and repair costs.

As an A5 2.0T owner, I experienced nearly identical starting issues last season. The main symptoms matched, intermittent no-start when turning the key and rough running when the engine did fire up. The ignition switch failure is a known weak point on these models. When my car had similar symptoms, the diagnosis revealed two problems: a faulty ignition switch and a blown 15A fuse for the fuel pump circuit. The fuse issue was causing the unusual shutoffs while driving. These starting issues can quickly escalate from an inconvenience to a serious safety concern, especially with the engine cutting out during operation. The dashboard lights would flicker before shutdown, which was a clear indicator of electrical problems. The repair involved replacing both the ignition switch assembly and the fuse box. While not the most complex job, access to the ignition switch requires careful disassembly of the steering column. The electrical system needed comprehensive testing after the repair to ensure all circuits were functioning properly. Would strongly recommend having it checked soon, as continuing to drive with an unreliable ignition system could leave you stranded or create unsafe driving conditions.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the A5. Had almost identical issues with my S3 last month, no response when turning the key and really unstable running when it did start. My dashboard lights were going crazy too. Got it fixed at a local shop that specializes in car electronics. They diagnosed a faulty ignition switch and some wiring issues near the steering column. The repair sorted out all the starting issues completely and the engine runs smooth now. Do you remember roughly how much you paid for the full repair? Also curious if you have had any other electrical problems since getting it fixed? My mechanic mentioned something about checking the alternator in a few months just to be safe.

After getting the ignition switch replaced on my A5, everything has worked flawlessly. The total repair came to 52 Euro for the blown fuse plus labor costs for diagnosing and replacing the faulty components. Having a specialist handle the electrical work was definitely worth it. The starter motor now engages perfectly every time I turn the ignition key. No more dashboard light issues or engine stalling problems. While the mechanic suggested checking the alternator, I have not needed any follow-up repairs in the months since. The ignition coil system has also been working properly, with smooth engine starts and stable running. For peace of mind, I keep a close eye on any electrical symptoms, but the car has been completely reliable since the fix. Good to hear your S3 is running well after the repair. These electrical gremlins can be tricky to diagnose, but once properly fixed, they tend to stay fixed.

Thanks for the advice. Took my S3 to a new mechanic who really knew their stuff with car electronics. The total repair came to 780 Euro, which included a new ignition switch, some wiring repairs, and diagnostic time. The starting issues are completely gone now. When I turn the key, the engine fires up right away without any hesitation. No more dashboard light problems or unusual shutdowns while driving. The rough running is also fixed, engine runs super smooth now. The mechanic walked me through everything they found. Turns out the old ignition switch was heavily corroded and some wires in the steering column were damaged. They showed me the worn parts which helped justify the repair cost. The whole thing took about 4 hours to fix. Really glad I got it sorted before being left stranded somewhere. Much better experience with this shop compared to my last mechanic.
