Audi A4 Motor Mount Failure Causes Rough Idle Issues

My A4 2.0 from 2000 has started showing some concerning symptoms that point toward a faulty motor mount. The engine idles very roughly and the check engine light is on with stored error codes. The vibration issues are most noticeable when the car is stationary. From my research, it seems the rubber mount could be deteriorating, but I want to be sure before heading to a workshop. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and confirmed it was indeed the engine mount? What was the repair process like and did it fully resolve the vibration problems? Also interested in knowing if you had any transmission mount issues checked at the same time since I might as well get everything inspected while its being worked on.

Having worked on cars as a hobby for several years, I encountered a similar issue with my A3 1.8 from 2002. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I experienced, heavy vibrations at idle and engine warning lights. In my case, it turned out that a failed mount was not the core issue, despite the similar symptoms. The repair shop discovered a loose connector at the engine wiring harness that was causing erratic signals. The rubber mount and transmission mount were actually in good condition when inspected. The fix involved properly securing the cable connection and replacing a damaged plug, costing 95 Euro for parts and labor. After the repair, the vibrations completely disappeared and the check engine light cleared. Before jumping to conclusions about mount wear or mount failure, it would be helpful to know: What error codes are you getting specifically? Does the vibration change when shifting between Park and Drive? Have you noticed any fluid leaks around the transmission area? Does the vibration get worse during acceleration? With this information, we can better determine if your issue is mount-related or potentially something similar to what I experienced with the wiring.

Thanks for all your input regarding my mount issue. Last service was done 2 weeks ago, no other issues found, current mileage 72008 KM. The vibration intensifies when shifting between gears, which further supports the engine mount theory. I checked underneath and noticed the mounting bracket shows significant wear. The rubber on the passenger side mount appears cracked and deteriorated. Based on the workshop manual, replacing both mounts would take around 4-5 hours labor. Does that sound accurate for this repair? The quoted price seems high at 450 Euro for parts and labor combined. Looking at the options now between fixing just the worn mount or doing both sides preventively to avoid future vibration issues.

Based on my experience with the same repair on my A3, that labor estimate of 4-5 hours is accurate for replacing engine mounts. When I had mine done, the job took about that long since accessing some mounting points requires careful maneuvering around other components. The 450 Euro quote sounds reasonable considering the parts quality and labor involved. When my defective engine mount was replaced, I opted to do both sides since the rubber mount on the other side also showed early signs of wear. This preventive approach saved me from dealing with vibration issues again just months later. The cracked rubber and mounting bracket wear you described matches what I saw on my car. The intensified vibration when shifting gears is a classic symptom of mount wear that I experienced as well. In my case, waiting too long led to increased transmission stress due to excess engine movement. If budget allows, replacing both mounts is the smarter long-term solution. The labor cost difference is minimal since most of the work involves accessing the mounting locations. Using quality parts will ensure proper engine support and eliminate those unwanted vibration issues for years to come.

Based on the information shared, I can definitely confirm my engine mount problem now. The symptoms match exactly with mount failure, especially the increased vibration during gear shifts and the visible rubber deterioration I found. The 4-5 hour labor estimate makes sense given the complex mounting points that need to be accessed. While 450 Euro for parts and labor is more than I hoped to spend, it seems to be the going rate for proper mount replacement. The suggestion about doing both sides proactively to prevent future vibration issues really resonates with me. I think I will proceed with replacing both engine mounts rather than just fixing the obviously worn one. No point saving a bit now only to deal with similar mount wear and vibration problems in a few months. Going to schedule the repair next week and will make sure they use quality parts to ensure a lasting fix. Better to address these mount issues properly now before they cause additional transmission problems.
