Audi A4 Coil Pack Issues Causing Engine Problems

My A4 2.0T from 2010 has started acting up with some concerning symptoms. The engine runs rough, especially at idle where it sometimes stalls completely. When accelerating, the car jerks noticeably and the check engine light is now permanently on. Vehicle diagnostics point towards a possible coil pack issue, but I want to be sure before replacing parts. Has anyone encountered similar symptoms and had their ignition coils replaced? What was your repair experience and did it fully resolve these issues? Looking to hear about repair costs and whether you needed to change spark plugs at the same time. Engine hesitation is really making the car unpleasant to drive, so any quick feedback would be great.

Having some experience with these issues, I dealt with similar symptoms on my A5 2.0T from 2012. The misfire symptoms you describe match exactly what I experienced, rough idle, jerking during acceleration, and the engine running inconsistently. After vehicle diagnostics, my workshop found a damaged wire connection to one of the coil packs. They discovered this after testing each cylinder. The repair involved fixing the connection and testing the coil pack itself, which luckily was still good. Total cost was 95 Euro for the diagnostic work and repair. In many cases, coil failure can cause these exact symptoms, but sometimes its just the wiring or connections. Before replacing parts, having proper diagnostics done can save money. What error codes is your car showing? Also, when was the last time you had spark plugs replaced? This information would help determine if its purely a coil pack issue or if other components need attention. Would also be helpful to know: Does the issue occur more when the engine is cold or warm? Are all cylinders affected or does it feel like just one is misfiring? Have you noticed any changes in fuel consumption?

Last service done at 94100 KM. Thanks for the helpful feedback. The check engine light showed error code P0303 pointing to cylinder 3 misfire. The engine hesitation happens mostly when the engine is warm, and fuel consumption has increased by about 15%. The ignition system seems to struggle specifically in cylinder 3, and vehicle diagnostics confirm its not affecting other cylinders. Looks like replacing just the single coil pack might solve it. I checked the wiring as suggested and all connections appear solid. The spark plugs were changed 25000 KM ago, so they should still be good. Will get the coil pack replaced and update on the results.

Thanks for the P0303 error code info, that definitely narrows it down. Your symptoms match exactly what I experienced before replacing my ignition coil, especially the increased fuel consumption and isolated cylinder 3 misfire. In my case, even with good spark plugs, the faulty coil caused similar issues with cylinder 3. Since your plugs are relatively new at 25000 KM, focusing on just the coil pack makes sense. The fact that the misfire occurs more when warm also matches the typical pattern of coil failure. My repair cost for the single ignition coil was 85 Euro plus labor. The improvement was immediate, no more engine hesitation or rough running. Just make sure to get a quality OEM coil pack, as aftermarket ones can sometimes cause issues down the line. Given the identical symptoms and diagnostic results, Id bet your misfire issues will clear up with the coil replacement. Vehicle diagnostics pointing to a single cylinder typically means its not a broader engine management problem.

The check engine light showed error code P0303 pointing to cylinder 3 misfire. After getting more insight from everyone, I feel confident about proceeding with just the coil pack replacement for now. The engine hesitation seems isolated to cylinder 3 when warm, matching what others experienced with similar ignition system issues. Vehicle diagnostics were helpful in pinpointing the problem. Since my spark plugs are relatively new at 25000 KM and the wiring connections are solid, a single coil pack replacement should resolve the misfire. The 85 Euro repair cost mentioned seems reasonable too. Appreciate the confirmation that these symptoms match coil pack failure patterns. Will get it replaced with an OEM part this week and follow up on whether it fixes the rough running and fuel consumption increase. Thanks for helping diagnose this, its given me confidence to address the problem without replacing unnecessary parts.
