Audi A4 B5 Avant problems with the EGR valve

Hello everyone! I have a problem with my 2001 Audi A4 Diesel and am looking for your experience and tips. I have noticed the following symptoms: The check engine light comes on, the engine stalls on its own, the engine power decreases, the engine runs rough, there is a strong exhaust smell, the car shakes when idling and there is no speed indicator. I suspect a functional fault in the EGR valve. Have any of you had similar experiences and can you tell me how you solved this in the workshop? Your advice and experience would help me a lot. Many thanks in advance!

Hello, I had a similar problem with my 2003 Audi A6 Diesel. Well, I have little experience with cars, but I remember how I solved it back then. At the garage we discovered that the EGR valve was defective and stuck. The valve had to be replaced, which cost me 355 euros. It helped to solve the problem and my car ran smoothly again afterwards. But it could also be something else in your case, it would be helpful to have some more information about your vehicle to be able to help you more precisely. For example, what is the general condition of your car? How often is it serviced and when was the last inspection? I hope this helps you!

Hey, thanks for your answer. It was really helpful! My Audi already has 178654 km on it and the last inspection was pretty recent. I think I'll plan a visit to the garage and see if the EGR valve is the cause. Your experience gives me confidence that this might solve the problem. Thanks again for your advice!

Hey, no problem, I'm glad I could help! Your Audi has already done a fair amount of mileage, but with regular inspections and good care it should still be able to serve you well. It sounds like you're taking good care of it. A faulty EGR valve could well be the cause of the symptoms you've described. The replacement part and installation weren't exactly cheap in my case, but it was definitely worth it. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's also the EGR valve in your case and that your Audi will run smoothly again afterwards. Keep us posted on how it goes. And remember, we're always here for you if you have any further questions. Good luck!

Thank you very much for your advice and for keeping your fingers crossed! Such advice and experience is worth its weight in gold, especially for someone like me who knows very little about cars. I will point out the EGR valve at the garage and hope that it will run better again afterwards. I will definitely keep you posted. Thanks again and see you soon!
